Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

Next week will be a very busy week for our students and staff. Our 7th and 8th graders will be taking the STAAR tests on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please see below for more details on the testing schedule.

Our 7th and 8th grade teachers and students have done an excellent job preparing for these assessments; I am confident that they will do well. Students will be testing from 8:50 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.  As always, it is recommended that students get a good 8 hours of sleep and eat a hearty breakfast in the morning before they come to school. If possible, please do not take your son or daughter out of school for doctor appointments on Tuesday and/or Wednesday.

During all STAAR testing days, parents will have limited access to the campus due to testing security.  Parents and/or family members will not be able to deliver lunch to students, or eat lunch with students, during STAAR testing days. Thank you for your support in helping us create a great testing environment for our students.

Have a great weekend!

Willow Springs Middle School is fortunate to have a Custodial Staff committed to providing a clean, beautiful, healthy environment for our students and staff.  Our hard-working custodians clean our halls, restrooms, cafeteria, and classrooms every day to provide our students with the best learning environment possible.  WSMS Cafeteria Staff are here bright and early every day to prepare delicious, appetizing meals for students and staff. Our students often comment that the WSMS cafeteria is the best!  We want to recognize these dedicated staff members. Please join us in honoring our Custodians and Cafeteria Staff during the week of April 29 - May 3. Students will help clean the cafeteria during this week and help with trash collection throughout the week.  The WSMS PTA will be providing Treat Bags for staff to thank them for their outstanding service. Campus Information and Reminders
Safety Corner--Reminder on Carpool Pick-Up Procedures
As we head into spring, we will have fewer and fewer after school activities.  This means that we will have more students getting pickup in the carpool lanes after school.  In an effort to keep our students safe and help our carpool run efficiently, please see below for a few reminders on carpool pick up.

  • Please remember to always pull forward in the carpool lane.
  • If your student is not ready for pick up when you arrive, please continue to pull forward rather than stopping and waiting in the carpool lane.  You may also pull into the back parking lot and park in a parking spot until they are ready for pick up.
  • It is important that we keep the carpool line moving so we limit back-up traffic on to West Lucas Rd.
  • Please do not honk to get your students attention.  This distracts other drivers and students as they are getting to their vehicles.
  • Please do not use your cell phone in the carpool line.
  • We have staff members to assist students at the cross walks and moving toward vehicles.
  • If you are in a hurry, please arrive in carpool after 4:10.  Traffic moves slowly between 4:00--4:10 and then picks up as more students exit the building and load into cars.

Drug Dogs on Campus
We will have a drug dog on campus for an unannounced visit once a month for the remainder of the school year.  When classrooms are selected to be searched, all students will need to exit the room leaving their backpacks and other belongings.  The drug dog, the handler, and an administrator will enter the room to conduct the search. At the conclusion of the search, students and the teacher can re-enter the room.

Notes from the Nurse - Medications
If your child has medicine at school, please make sure your child has exactly enough medicine to finish the school year. You are responsible for picking up any extra medicine as the school district has a policy against sending medicines home with students. At the end of this school year, any remaining medicines, including inhalers, will be thrown out. The school cannot store these for you during the summer.

Please remember, if your child is going to continue being medicated at school during the 2019-2020 school year, you will need to complete a new medication sheet at that time and bring a SMALL or travel size bottle of medicine that is not expired.

Immunizations
Early reminder to parents of students that will be 7th graders during the 2019-2020 school year:
It is a State requirement that all 7th grade students must have had 2 required updated immunizations in order to attend school. These required immunizations are, TDaP booster (Tetanus booster) and Menactra (Meningococcal). Please obtain a copy of your child's updated shots and provide it to our school nurse, Gretchen Young, BEFORE August 16, 2019. You may drop it off in person, send it through the mail to Willow Springs Middle School, 1101 West Lucas Road, Lucas, TX 75002, by email to Gretchen Young or fax at 469-742-8501.

WSMS Band UIL
Congratulations to the Willow Springs Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble!  Both bands received the UIL Sweepstakes Award, earning 1st division Superior ratings from all six judges.  This is the highest honor you can receive at UIL Music Contest. Ms. Abbott, Ms. Ball and all the Lovejoy Band Directors are so proud of our students.  Willow Springs Band members are talented, dedicated and tenacious! #lovejoyproud

Student Attendance
One of our continuing focus areas for this year is to increase our student and teacher daily attendance on campus.  Research shows that the more students are in class with their teacher, the more they will learn over the course of the school year.  The more students learn, the more success and confidence they will have in middle school. To promote this, we will be recognizing students and staff who have perfect attendance during each nine weeks.  Please assist us by working with your son or daughter to ensure they are getting enough rest, eating a healthy diet, and are taking care of themselves overall. In addition, our new state accountability system uses student attendance as criteria for evaluating the performance of schools.  We also receive state funding based on our "Average Daily Attendance" of students that are present after 10:00 AM. As you begin to plan out of town trips this spring, please consider keeping your children in school through the Friday before each break. Let's work together to encourage our students to be in class every day.

Congratulations to all of our students who achieved this.

WSMS School Report Card (SRC) From the Texas Education Agency
I wanted to make you aware that the 2017-18 School Report Card (SRC) from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is available on the district website under "Quick Links" and then under "Required Postings" or by clicking here.

The same reports can be accessed on our campus website under the "About" tab and then selecting TEA School Campus Report Cards.

The SRC provides information on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), as well as information student enrollment, class size averages, and financial expenditures.

As you may recall, districts do not receive a SRC but the STAAR performance at each campus contributed to Lovejoy ISD being one of only four districts of the 1227 districts and charter schools in Texas to receive the highest rating on the state accountability system with an overall grade of "A" with a scale score of 97 out of 100 possible points.

Please contact me at [email protected] or 214-293-9938 if you have any questions concerning our School Report Card from the Texas Education Agency.  Thank you for your continued support of WSMS.

Reporting an Incident at WSMS
One of our top priorities at Willow Springs Middle School is to ensure the safety of all of our students.  Our most important asset in this is the eyes and ears our students can provide us on campus. We will begin using the Safe Schools Alert System this year for students and parents to report incidents they are aware of happening.  You can access the system by going to www.lovejoyisd.net .  Under Quick Links click on "REPORT IT!"  You will have four ways to submit an incident.  Furthermore, you will receive an access code to follow the progression of how an incident is being handled.

WSMS Girls Soccer
Tuesday night the 7th grade girls soccer team beat Wylie Cooper 3-1. The scoring got started in the first half after Taylor Person finished a cross from Kailey Littlefield. Natalie Knight provided the assist for the second goal to Kailey Littlefield who dribbled forty yards and finished at the far post. Kailey Littlefield once again provided the assist for the third goal to ice the game. Kailey picked up the ball after a nice through ball was played by Hannah Daehnert and passed the ball to a wide open Cambry Patrick who finished off the beautiful piece of play.

The 8th grade girls soccer team tied Wylie Cooper 2-2 Tuesday night. Down 1-0 at halftime, the Leopards fought back to take the lead and were unfortunate to concede the tying goal. The first goal was assisted by Aubrey Goff who found Paige Young in the box who finished off her shot in the upper ninety. Aubrey Goff provided the assist for the second goal as well. Aubrey found Maggie Manders on top of the box who bent the ball into the far post for the goal. Unfortunately, the Leopards could not find the back of the net.

Next games are on Thursday, April 11th, at 5:30/6:50 at Wylie Burnett Middle School.

WSMS Boys Soccer
On Tuesday night, the 7th grade boys soccer team traveled to Wylie Cooper where played a hard fought game that ended in a 1-1 tie. Wylie Cooper jumped out to an early 1-0 but the Leopards responded late in the first half to even the score. The lone Leopard goal was scored by Jackson Roberts on an excellent corner cross from Grant Anderson. The Leopards did a great job after getting down to respond to tie the game and that continued into the second half as neither team was able to break the tie.

The 8th grade boys soccer team played a terrific game working well with each other and went on to defeat Wylie Cooper 4-3. The Leopards got off to a fast start jumping on Wylie Cooper early. In the 5th minute, Hunter Reck got the scoring started off a perfect pass from Caden Carlock to take a 1-0 lead. Shortly later, Joey Hansford added to the lead with the assist from George Salcedo-Garcia in the 10th minute. George Salcedo-Garcia had a perfectly placed shot in the back corner just out of the goalie's reach to make it 3-0. The last goal game of an own goal as George Salcedo-Garcia played the ball in that was knocked in by Wylie Cooper. Wylie Cooper was able to respond with a couple goals of their own late but the Leopards were able to keep the lead and get the win.

The Next games will be Thursday, April 11th at WSMS vs Wylie Burnett with 7th grade playing at 5:30, followed by 8th grade at 6:50 at Wylie Burnett Middle School.
