Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

We are looking forward to recognizing our 8th grade students at tomorrow morning's awards ceremony.  Congratulations to all of our students and teachers for all of their accomplishments.

As we move into our final week of school, please be sure your son or daughter stays focused and prepared for final exams.  In addition, we are still in need of parent volunteers to read final exam to students in the CAT.  If you would be willing and are available this next week to read a final exam, please see below to sign up. We would greatly appreciate your help. Have a great three day weekend.

WSMS Elective Ranking
As you are now aware, WSMS is moving forward with our preparation to a 7 period day for all students.  This means your middle school student will lose one elective class for the following school year. WSMS start and end times will remain the same.  We will begin at 8:50 AM and dismiss at 4:00 PM. Each period will have an additional 4-6 minutes on the 7 period day.

To make sure we are creating a schedule your student will enjoy, we would very much like to hear from you.  You may look at your child's requested classes in PowerSchool. We then ask that you complete the elective rank form below by May 30th , so our counselors can use your students first choice picks when possible. If you have any questions or concerns, do hot hesitate to reach out to me or one of our counselors.

Campus Information and Reminders
Safety Corner
It has been brought to our attention that some of our students are creating groups in Snapchat and doing picture ratings of one another.  Through this process, students ask each other volunteer to submit pictures of themselves to the Snapchat group and then each member in the group rates and comments on the pictures.  It is our understanding that some of the students who have volunteered to share pictures of themselves with the group have received negative or derogatory comments from other students in the group as part of the rating.  From what we have gathered, all of this Snap Chat activity is taking place outside of school. Please spend some time with your son or daughter and visit with them about the dangers of sharing pictures of themselves through social media, especially if the picture is going to rated or commented on by other students.

Summer Mailer
Our summer mail is expected to go out late July. STAAR results and report cards will be included in this mail out. If you would like to see your child's report card before then, please check the Parent Portal after June 6 by clicking here.

To access STAAR results online go to www.texasassessment.com and select the families tab at the top.
If you do not have your Unique Student Access Code click on Find My Unique Student Access Code.  You will then be prompted to enter student information. The PEIMS ID number is the student's social security number.  Once you provide this information you will be provided with a Unique Student Access Code.

eCYBERMISSION Success
eCYBERMISSION is a web-based science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) competition for students in grades six through nine . Students are challenges to explore how STEM works in their world while working as a team to solve problems in their community. Teams compete virtually in state and regional competitions.  The WSMS team of Simi Fadel, Natalie McLaren, Camryn Sperling and Jordyn Watanabe won 2nd Place in the state of Texas. Their project consisted finding a way to reuse plastic bags and use them for insulation in home attics.  Congratulations to these 8th graders.

Notes from the Nurse - Medications
If your child has medicine at school, please make sure your child has exactly enough medicine to finish the school year. You are responsible for picking up any extra medicine as the school district has a policy against sending medicines home with students. At the end of this school year, any remaining medicines, including inhalers, will be thrown out. The school cannot store these for you during the summer.

Please remember, if your child is going to continue being medicated at school during the 2019-2020 school year, you will need to complete a new medication sheet at that time and bring a SMALL or travel size bottle of medicine that is not expired.

Immunizations
Early reminder to parents of students that will be 7th graders during the 2019-2020 school year:

Reporting an Incident at WSMS
One of our top priorities at Willow Springs Middle School is to ensure the safety of all of our students.  Our most important asset in this is the eyes and ears our students can provide us on campus. We will begin using the Safe Schools Alert System this year for students and parents to report incidents they are aware of happening.  You can access the system by going to www.lovejoyisd.net .  Under Quick Links click on "REPORT IT!"  You will have four ways to submit an incident.  Furthermore, you will receive an access code to follow the progression of how an incident is being handled.

Thank you
This year has been wonderful for the WSMS PTA, most of our successes are due to your membership, involvement and check drive donations!  Without your support in all of those areas we would have not been able to bring to WSMS 3 student programs and 5 parent presentations as well as treat our teachers and staff to gratitude lunches or support the school with countless volunteer areas. Thank you for being a part of what makes WSMS a GREAT place to learn!  To see all of WSMS PTA's accomplishments this year please read our year in review found here .
