Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

This weekend is a four day weekend for students.  We will observe the Labor Day Holiday on Monday and then teachers and staff will have a professional development day on Tuesday.  We will be ready to welcome back students on Wednesday.  

We have begun to implement structures at Willow Springs this week to encourage students to turn in their homework on time in order to not get behind.  Homework detention can be assigned by teachers to students who do not turn in their homework.  This is not a consequence designed for anything other than getting homework completed.  If your child is assigned homework detention, either before or after school, the teacher will contact you and get confirmation. 

Beginning tomorrow, we will start keeping up with tardies.  Students are allowed four “free” tardies per quarter.  Once they have reached their allotted amount of tardies, they will need to serve an hour of Friday Night School for each additional tardy.  Based on last year, students rarely accrue tardies after first period.  Most tardies are acquired from being late to first period because they have arrived late to school.  Students will be given notification once they get to three tardies.  If a student is having trouble getting to a particular class because of the distance between classes, we will work with them to remove those tardies.   Tardies for this reason rarely happen.  

Please note that Friday is picture day.  I will make sure and do an all call at school to remind students on Thursday.

FINAL CALL!  WSMS Student Spirit Shirts
As part of the WSMS student experience, we would like to offer a spirit shirt for all 7th and 8th grade students.  These will be shirts that students can wear to school,  pep rallies, athletic events, and field trips.  During campus field trips and community service events, we will ask students to wear their spirit shirt to identify them as a WSMS student.  Spirit shirts may be purchased by clicking here.   The deadline to purchase shirts is August 31st.


REMINDER! Leopard Fishing Club - First Meeting, September 1st
7th and 8th grade student anglers - if you are interested in joining the Leopard Fishing Club plan to join us for a membership meeting on Wednesday, September 1st at 6:30pm at the WSMS Cafeteria.   

The purpose of the Club is to educate and prepare future Leopard Fishing High School Team anglers for competitive bass fishing. As a Club member you will be introduced to competitive bass fishing, interact with the high school fishing team and participate in fish camp.

REMINDER! School Picture Day – Friday, September 3 
Students will be taking pictures for the Willow Springs yearbook and their student ID’s on Friday, September 3. Order forms will be going home with your student the 2nd week of school, however, you may access it online by clicking here. Please assist your student in dressing appropriately to ensure they follow LISD dress code. Students out of LISD dress code will be provided a school shirt to wear during their ID photo and will have the option to retake their yearbook photo on Wednesday, September 29th. 


NEW! Book Fair Begins Friday, September 3
Hello Families! 
 
We are excited to invite you to our upcoming Book Fair starting September 3rd! This is a great opportunity for students to build not only their home libraries but their love of reading as well. As always, Book Fairs help build our library collection and the programs that our school library can run.
 
Below is some important information about our upcoming fair. We are so excited to have this opportunity and we cannot wait to see you there! 
 
Important Information:
- This fair will offer a cash-free option called eWallet. It is a convenient digital account that your child can use when shopping at the fair. Grandparents, family far away, and others can contribute too! 
 
- If you cannot make it to the fair, you can shop online via our Virtual Book Fair (link to come next week). All orders ship directly to your home and shipping will be free on orders over $25.
 
- We will be open to students before and after school, as well as during lunches. We will also be open during the WSMS Fall Open House on September 8th. This is a great opportunity for your whole family to get to shop at the fair! 
 
- The fair dates are September 3rd through September 13th

REMINDER! 7th /8th Grade Open House – Wednesday, September 8th
Our 7th/8th grade Open House will be Wednesday, September 8th from 6:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m. Parents will have an opportunity to walk their student’s schedules and hear from all of their teachers. Student’s schedules and school maps will be available in the rotunda upon arrival. This will be a come and go event. Please see below for alpha specific timeframes:
6pm - 7pm: A - L
7pm - 8pm: M - Z


NEW! Advocating for Yourself and Others/Bullying Prevention Presentations, September 21 & 22
According to StopBullying.gov, the school years most at risk for bullying are 4th through 8th grades. At WSMS, we are committed to preventing bullying behavior on our campus and teaching students to be strong advocates for themselves and others. On September 21st and September 22nd, all students at WSMS will participate in an Advocacy / Bullying Prevention presentation through their Reading/Language Arts classes. SAVE THE DATE! WSMS Fall Back to School Social & Dance - Friday, September 24th
Our Fall Back to School Social and Dance will be Friday, September 24th from 6:00p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at WSMS. We will have a DJ and music in the cafeteria as well as basketball and volleyball, in both gyms.  Tickets can be purchased online beginning Wednesday, September 8th for $8 up until Thursday, September 23rd at 10pm, from the Online Payment Center.  Tickets will be $10 on the day of the social.
 
-Students are welcome to purchase snacks and water during the dance.  
 
-Pizza, Chips, Candy and Bottled Water will be available for students to purchase for $1.00  
 
Chaperones: We need at least 12 chaperones for this event to be able to offer all of the activities.  Chaperoning is easy, very little work, and it's fun to watch the kids having a good time (they forget we are there). More information to come on how to sign-up! 


Additional Dance Information
*This is not a date dance so middle school students will not need a date to attend.  
*The dress code will be the same as during the school day.  
*This is for Willow Springs students only, students who attend a campus other than Willow Springs will not be allowed to enter.  
*Once students enter the dance, they will not be allowed to leave the building until 8:00 p.m. If your son or daughter needs to be picked up early, please come to the cafeteria doors in the courtyard to check your student out.
*7th Grade Parent pick up will be in the back of the school in the courtyard.
*8th Grade Parent pick up will be in the front of the school near the main entrance.

To keep all of our students safe, please partner with us and monitor your child for the following symptoms BEFORE sending them to school. 

  • Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Shaking or exaggerated shivering
  • Significant muscle pain or ache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Congestion or runny nose
 
If your student is not feeling well, please keep them at home and email your child’s assistant principal. Please also keep them home, contact the nurse, and their assistant principal if your student receives a lab positive COVID test.

If there is a positive case of COVID in your child's classroom, we will send an email to let you know. Lovejoy ISD will maintain our current COVID-19 dashboard by each campus on the website. Numbers will be updated at the end of each day. We are also required to notify the Health Department and the TEA of positive cases in our schools.

The PowerSchool ParentPortal is now open for you to complete the online Enrollment & Student Information Forms. Please click here to access the Parent Portal. Completion of these forms is required every year for every student. Please take a few minutes to update your contact information and other forms.


School Holiday – September 6th & 7th
Monday, September 6th is a student and teacher holiday in observance of Labor Day. Tuesday, September 7th is a student holiday and teacher/staff work day.

WSMS is looking for parents to assist with Club Days (3-4 times per year) by supervising (and setting up and taking down as necessary) a club. If you or someone you know has an interest, please review the details and sign up.
 
First meeting
The first membership meeting will take place on September 14 at 11:45am in the auxiliary gym, and only members may vote (so sign up today!).

G/T Referral Window Open Through September 3rd
The referral window for Gifted and Talented Services (G/T) is open through September 3. Families who desire testing for their child(ren) must complete the referral process in PowerSchool. 
 
Testing is scheduled for Saturdays, September 11 and 26, 2021. Detailed appointment times will be sent by email the week of September 6.
