Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

The last PTO parent webinar of the year will take place on Friday, May 14 at 1:00 PM. This presentation will highlight some of the digital trends we are seeing with middle school students. Hopefully, the presentation will allow you to be more aware of the apps and sites your children are accessing. Our presenter will be Michelle Nietert from Allen Counseling Associates. The link to join this presentation is:

Passcode: 157759

The webinar will be recorded and shared as well.

Next Wednesday, May 19, our 8th graders will have their panoramic picture taken.  These pictures will be on sale the following day in the cafeteria.  For this picture, which will be taken outside, students will be allowed to remove their masks until the conclusion of the picture.  All virtual students are invited to attend and should arrive no later than 2:15 PM.  Remember, that the 19th is our Algebra EOC.  If your virtual student is in algebra, they will already be on campus and can remain through the photo shoot.

As we wrap up the year, please find time to pick up any medication in the clinic your child may have before May 28th.

Finally, please also find information below on library books.

Have a great week!

Cell Phone STAAR Policy
On STAAR testing days, we are requesting students who will be testing do not bring electronics to campus. Cell phones, tablets, laptops, eReaders, electronic watches, or other electronic devices will NOT be allowed in testing rooms. If students forget and bring their devices to school, they will be asked to sign a waiver and place their electronics in a plastic bin that will be removed from the testing room. Any electronics brought to school on testing days will be returned once testing is complete. Students will NOT be allowed to place electronics in lockers on testing days.

Additional Information For STAAR Tests
  • If students have been issued a Chromebook from the school, they will need to charge it and bring it to school for testing.
  • Students will have 4 hours to complete the test.
  • If a student arrives past 9:15, then they will NOT be allowed to take the test, and the student will have to make the test up on a different day.
  • If students are absent from the test, they will have the opportunity to take the test on a different day as long as it is within the testing window.
  • All test taking students will need to bring an appropriate snack, a sack lunch, a book, and a bottle of water.
  • Appropriate snacks are quick, easy, and nutritious. Snacks should not require utensils, shouldn't be sticky or full of sugar. (Examples of appropriate snacks are: protein bars, string cheese, crackers, goldfish, cheerios, etc).
  • All test taking students will eat lunch in their testing rooms.
  • Due to security on testing days, parents will not be able to deliver lunch to their students on STAAR testing days.
  • No before school tutorials May 11 - May 14.
  • Virtual students are required to take the STAAR.
  • Click here for CoVid precautions the school will be taking for STAAR.

NEW! Library Books Due May 14th
All student library materials are due back on Friday, May 14th. Students with outstanding materials/fines will not be allowed to receive their yearbooks until the library account is cleared.  You will be notified by email by Monday, May 17th, if your student has outstanding books/fines.

NEW! Service Learning Rescheduled Date
The second day of service learning has been rescheduled for Monday, May 17th.  We are once again in need of volunteers, rakes and wheelbarrows.  Please consider signing up to help us finish our great outdoor projects.  Click here for sign up.

NEW! Final Exam Reviews – Available Monday, May 17th
On Monday, May 17th, teachers will provide students with a copy of the final exam review.  In addition, an electronic copy will be posted in Google Classroom for students to access on Monday, May 17th.

Teachers will be going over their review in class prior to the final exam. Each review will provide vocabulary, concepts, and/or skills needed to be successful on the final. Students will be expected to take the information from the review and apply it to questions on the exam that include graphs, charts, maps, diagrams, and excerpts. These application based questions provide a foundation for the level of thinking that aligns with the higher level thinking of our state standards in middle school and high school. Rather than studying the review for 2-3 hours the night before the final exam, we encourage students to prepare for each exam by studying for approximately 15-20 minutes a day. In addition, students should refer to notes, handouts, assignments, and their textbook to support their learning and preparation.

UPDATED! End Of Year Awards
7th Grade Awards Ceremony Information
Our 7th grade awards ceremony will be held on May 20 beginning at 8:00 AM. For this ceremony, we are only asking students receiving an award to be in attendance and to arrive and be in their seats by 7:45 AM. We will recognize students who will be receiving “A” honor roll, “A/B” honor roll, and teacher awards. If your child is receiving one of these awards, you should have already received an email notification. Also, due to limited parking and seating capacity we are only able to invite parents of students receiving a teacher award to be in attendance.  We will also live stream and record the event. The link to live stream the event will be sent out later this week.  I understand parents will want to capture this memory in a photograph. We will have photography students on site to take a picture of award recipients with their certificate(s) which will be shared with you so you can download.

If your child is a virtual student and receiving any of the above recognitions, we would like for them to be on campus to be recognized.

Students will be required to wear a mask, however, when they walk across the floor to receive their certificate(s), they will have the option to remove their mask.

NEW! Important News from Student Nutrition Regarding Student Meal Accounts
This is a courtesy message from Lovejoy Student Nutrition Services to inform households of an upcoming change in student meal accounts. In an effort to minimize negative balances at the end of the school year, beginning Monday, May 10th and for the remainder of the school year, students will no longer be able to charge meals which will result in the student incurring a negative balance to their meal account. Students may continue to use their lunch accounts as long as they have money in the account. Households with students who currently have negative balances will receive reminder emails and phone calls. Federal regulations prohibit us from rolling over negative balances to the next school year. Please make arrangements to remit payment for any negative lunch accounts your child may have incurred.

All positive balances will be rolled over to next school year. If you have a graduating senior, funds may be transferred to any sibling in the school district. To request a meal account refund, please complete a refund request form located on the Student Nutrition website. For assistance, please contact Student Nutrition at 469.742.8041.

Student Nutrition Services thanks you for your understanding and for allowing us to serve your student(s) this school year.

Please encourage your son or daughter to look through the lost and found by the library and the athletic lost and found and claim any sweatshirts, shoes, hats, etc. they may have left behind.  All items not claimed by June 3rd  will be donated to Allen Community Outreach.

Note From The Nurse
Regarding Medications
If your child has medicine at school, please make sure your child has exactly enough medicine to finish the school year. You are responsible for picking up any extra medicine as the school district has a policy against sending medicines home with students. At the end of this school year, any remaining medicines, including inhalers, will be thrown out. The school cannot store these for you during the summer.

Please remember, if your child is going to continue being medicated at school during the 2021-2022 school year, you will need to complete a new medication sheet at that time and bring a SMALL or travel size bottle of medicine that is not expired.

Immunizations
Early reminder to parents of students that will be 7th graders during the 2021-2022 school year:
It is a State requirement that all 7th grade students must have had 2 required updated immunizations in order to attend school. These required immunizations are, TDaP booster (Tetanus booster) and Menactra (Meningococcal). Please obtain a copy of your child’s updated shots and provide it to our school nurse, Gretchen Young, BEFORE August 9th, 2021. You may drop it off in person, send it through the mail to Willow Springs Middle School, 1101 West Lucas Road, Lucas, TX 75002, by email to Gretchen Young or fax at 469-742-8501.

Dress Code Policy
Please help us by making sure what your son or daughter wears to school every day is in compliance with the LISD dress code. As part of the emotional, psychological, and physical changes of adolescence, middle school students can sometimes be nervous and apprehensive about what they or other students are wearing to school. Let’s work together to lower their anxiety by following the LISD Dress Code. For more information about the LISD Dress Code, please go here.
