Bloom & Beyond:

Celebrating Community, Sustainability and Alumni at WSOC

Greetings!

Join Us for Bloom

A Night in Full Flower

We invite you to join us for WSOC’s Annual Gala: Bloom: A Night in Full Flower Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 6:00-10:00 PM at 2145 Eats.

This joyful evening brings our community together to celebrate our school and support the education we cherish so deeply. As a nonprofit school, proceeds from the gala directly support WSOC’s operating budget — sustaining our teachers, programs, and the vibrant learning environment our children experience every day.

Growing Together: Cultivating Outdoor Spaces

At WSOC, nature is not just a backdrop — it is a teacher.

This year’s Bloom Gala Paddle Raise — Growing Together: Cultivating Outdoor Spaces will support meaningful enhancements to our outdoor learning environments, including:

  • Raised garden beds for classroom learning
  • Improvements to the nursery yard
  • Revitalized garden spaces where curiosity and stewardship can flourish

These are the places where children plant seeds, care for living things, observe the rhythms of the seasons, and build a lifelong relationship with the natural world. Together, we can cultivate environments where our children grow grounded, capable, and deeply connected.

Exciting Auction Items Are Already Blooming

We are incredibly grateful for the generous auction donations already coming in, including:

  • Dinner for two at The French Laundry
  • Mexican vacation getaways
  • Massages and wellness experiences
  • Private home chef experiences
  • A felted playscape created by the Early Childhood teachers

Help the Auction Bloom

We are still seeking auction donations to help make this event as meaningful and successful as possible. Vacation homes, unique experiences, goods, and services are all gratefully welcomed and play a vital role in supporting our beloved school.

If you have something you would like to contribute, please reach out to Julia Banda or me — we would be so grateful for your support.

Thank you for helping tend the garden in which our students grow, ensuring it remains vibrant, nurturing, and full of possibility.

With gratitude for this incredible community — let’s bloom together.

With gratitude,

Catherine Crahan

Campus & School News

WSOC Earns a Gold-Level Green Ribbon School Award

Our school has been recognized as a 2026 California Green Ribbon School at the Gold level, an honor awarded to schools that demonstrate exceptional commitment to sustainability, student health, and environmental education.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recently announced this year’s California Green Ribbon Schools (CA-GRS) honorees, recognizing 26 schools, 12 school districts, and one County Office of Education across the state for their outstanding efforts in resource conservation, health promotion, and environmental literacy.

In announcing the awards, Superintendent Thurmond noted that California Green Ribbon Schools exemplify what is possible when innovation, equity, and environmental stewardship come together. The program highlights schools that create healthy, sustainable learning environments while empowering students with the knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges and contribute thoughtfully to their communities.

At WSOC, this recognition reflects our community’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship through hands-on learning, campus sustainability practices, and programs that help students develop a meaningful relationship with the natural world.

For more information, please visit the CDE Green Ribbon Schools Award Program web page.

UCI Math Project

The Math Project from UC Irvine recently visited WSOC to share professional development with our faculty, offering engaging strategies for teaching mathematics and supporting students’ mathematical thinking. The Irvine Math Project partners with schools to provide hands-on, research-based training and curriculum support for K–12 teachers, helping educators deepen both their mathematical content knowledge and instructional practices.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from their team and to continue strengthening math instruction across our programs.

WSOC Accreditation Update

WSOC is currently engaged in the accreditation process, an important review that takes place every seven years to support reflection, accountability, and long-term growth. Through dual accreditation with WASC and AWSNA, we demonstrate both high academic standards and fidelity to the principles of Waldorf education.

Over the past year, faculty, staff, and leadership have completed an extensive self-study reflecting on our programs, community, and future goals. A visiting team will soon review this work, meet with members of our community, and observe school life to provide feedback that will help guide our development in the years ahead.

Click here to review the summary of our action plan that emerged from this self-study process.

Campus Snapshots

Early Childhood

Grade 3

The 3rd Graders recently got their hands dirty in the garden, mixing their own seed-starting blend of peat, perlite, pumice, and sand. Using repurposed clamshell containers, each student planted a selection of seeds—some of unknown age found in the garden shed! The cucumbers have already sprouted, and more seedlings are expected soon. Students will be able to take their plants home in terra cotta pots or help transplant them into the school garden.

Grade 4

4th Grade visited the Environmental Nature Center, where students deepened their understanding of California’s natural resources and the ways Indigenous people lived long ago. Stories they had encountered in the classroom came vividly to life through hands-on experiences, including trying traditional fire-starting methods. The class was engaged, respectful, and curious throughout the visit, making meaningful connections to their learning.

Grade 11

The 11th Grade took the stage in Eurythmy Hall for an evening of original monologues—each one written and performed by the students themselves. Through thoughtful writing and courageous performances, students shared heartfelt, humorous, and thought-provoking pieces that showcased their unique voices and growing artistic confidence. It was a wonderful celebration of creativity, hard work, and the power of storytelling

Grade 12

During a special Tea with the 12th Grade, our soon-to-be graduates shared thoughtful and honest reflections on their journey at WSOC. In conversation with faculty and community members, students spoke about the experiences, challenges, and moments of growth that shaped their time here, offering meaningful insight as they prepare for graduation and the paths ahead.

Grace Tomblin Marca | WSOC Class of 2018

WSOC is proud to celebrate alum Grace Tomblin Marca (Class of 2018), who has written and directed the play Faster in the Attic with Accidental Arson Theatre Company. A New York City–based playwright originally from California, Grace creates work that explores the mysterious, the familiar, and the fantastical through the lens of complex characters. Faster in the Attic is a gripping theatrical thriller that follows a woman searching for the truth behind her fiancée’s sudden death while uncovering surprising secrets about the person she thought she knew best. Grace’s growing body of work has been presented at festivals and theaters in New York, and we are delighted to see her creative voice flourishing on the stage.

Ways to Support WSOC

Class of 2026 Fundraising

Get Involved with the Parent Association

Waldorf School Orange County thrives through the care and participation of our community. As a nonprofit, independent school, we rely on the generosity of parent volunteers whose time and energy help support the many programs and events that enrich our students’ experience. The Parent Association helps coordinate these efforts and provides meaningful ways for families to connect, contribute, and build community.

WSOC was built upon thousands of volunteer hours, and that spirit of participation continues to be an essential part of school life. We hope each family will find a way to get involved that fits both their schedule and interests. Whether you’re able to help with a small, one-time project or join a committee supporting larger initiatives throughout the year, every contribution makes a difference.

There are many opportunities to participate and share your talents within the Parent Association. To learn more about joining a committee or finding the right volunteer role for you, please contact parentassociation@waldorfschool.com.
