Conference Session Proposals Due!

The 2021 conference will be hosted virtually over the course of two days. There will be four main breakout sessions hosting speakers grouped around similar waste and recycling trends, topics, and technologies. Attendees will be able to interact with speakers using the online platform.
 
WSRA’s conference provides stakeholders in Washington’s recycling and waste prevention community with the knowledge and resources to address current challenges in the recycling industry, implement and improve recycling programs, advocate for policies and initiatives that advance recycling and waste prevention, and support the development of a generation of professionals for whom sustainability is a core tenet of their work and life philosophy.
 
Proposals for presentations are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 26th, 2021.

Recycler of the Year and Hall of Fame Awards
The Recycler of the Year awards spotlight individuals, businesses, government agencies and community organizations that are making outstanding contributions to expanding and strengthening recycling and waste prevention. WSRA welcomes nominations of individuals and organizations that have demonstrated noteworthy dedication, innovation and success in recycling initiatives across the state.
 
Award categories include but are not limited to: Individual Recycler, Public Agency, Institution, Non-Profit, Higher Education Institution, Business Generator, Public Education, Youth Education, Innovation, Nucor Steel Recycling Business, and the Recycling Hall of Fame.
 
A committee of recycling professionals and community members will review 2021 Recycler of the Year nominations and select recipients, whose accomplishments will be featured at our Annual Conference, to be held virtually on May 24 - 25, 2021.
 
Nominations are due by 5:00 PM on Friday, March 26, 2021.

Seeking Board of Director Candidates
WSRA is seeking candidates for its Board of Directors. Board candidates must be members (precious metal, organization or individual) in good standing who are willing to commit at least 8 - 12 hours per month to working on WSRA activities. Being part of the WSRA Board of Directors is a great way to help set the direction for the association's work and is rewarding, educational, and lots of fun!

To be considered, please fill out the nomination form by 5:00 PM on March 16, 2021. Information from your form will be used by the nominating committee to prepare the ballot and used to prepare the Election Packet that's sent to the membership for voting.
WRED: To Shred or Not to Shred
Do you ask, “What do I do with shredded paper?”
Do you ponder, “Why can’t I put shredded paper in the recycling cart?”
Do you puzzle, “What do shredding companies do with shredded paper?”

These questions and more will be answered on Wednesday, March 3rd  from 9:30 -11:00 a.m. at WRED’s shred event! Coinciding with National Consumer Protection week and tax season, the Attorney General’s office will present on which documents should be shredded and common misconceptions about sensitive material. Shred-It and NorPac, will trace what happens next: how shredded paper is recycled into paper plates, napkins, and other everyday products and the challenges they face.

This live online event is free but registration is required.
Grant Opportunity:
EPA Region 10 has posted a new Request for Applications (RFA) to www.grants.gov for our Healthy, Resilient and Sustainable Communities grants program to improve community health, resilience, and/or sustainability through pollution prevention and/or sustainable materials management implementation. 
 
EPA Region 10 anticipates awarding approximately $120,000 under this announcement. Awards will be issued and managed through EPA’s Region 10 Office. EPA anticipates awarding 2-4 grants, ranging from $30,000 to $60,000. Electronic applications are due by Friday, April 30, 11:59 p.m. (EDT), submitted through grants.gov. 
 

Eligible applicants include:  
  •  State, county, and city governments in WA, OR, ID, and AK
  •  Independent school districts  
  •  State-controlled institutions of higher education  
  • Non-profit organizations  
  • Community-based grassroots organizations  
  • Federally recognized tribes and intertribal consortia  
  
Eligible projects must take place within the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, or Alaska.
