MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

As our regional economy continues to evolve, staying informed is key. This edition of WSTC WORKS: E-Newsletter highlights the work of our Adult Education and Literacy Program, including the hard work of our 2026 graduating class. Whether you’re an employer, job seeker or community partner, we hope this newsletter helps you stay connected to the local workforce landscape.

This month we wanted to share the positive outcomes that are a direct result of the Tarrant County Adult Education and Literacy Consortium. In the June edition of the newsletter, we highlighted some of the data and outcomes from the program, shared the graduation wrap up video and a Workforce WIN success story from this year's graduating class.

We are so proud of our graduates and thankful to the instructors, mentors and family that helped cheer them on.

We wrapped up this month's newsletter with our Workforce Round Up section. This section includes: the latest Labor Data from the Texas Workforce Commission and a call to action for all those employers who are hiring.

This edition is packed full of information, as always if our team can be of assistance, please let me know.

WORKFORCE WIN: ADULT EDUCATION & LITERACY PROGRAM

The Tarrant County Adult Education and Literacy Consortium held its 5th Annual National Adult Education Honor Society Induction Ceremony on Thursday, May 21st at the Arlington City Council Chambers.

Abel Campos says that he never would have imagined in a million years that he would be a keynote speaker for the Tarrant County National Honors Society induction ceremony. Abel was nominated by the staff at the Arlington Public Library (APL). Having the courage to stand in front of others may come easy for some, but with what he has overcome, it is a major accomplishment. When Able was just seven, getting to school was a battle. He had to fight gang violence, drug activity and police harassment.

When he finally arrived at school, it was no easier. As he reflects, all through his school years, it was “different.” He says that in school, he wanted to be “under the radar” – he didn’t want to draw attention to himself because of his learning disorders of Dyslexia and ADHD. He would avoid anything regarding reading because he did not know how to pronounce the words, let alone spell them. In ninth grade, his teacher would intentionally not call on him, to avoid making him feel embarrassed. This became common practice.

Now, as a recent NHS inductee and HSE graduate, Abel feels immense gratitude towards the staff at APL, including the teachers, custodians, managers, and CSAs. Abel says that being in the program has allowed him the opportunity to be himself without judgment and to express himself freely. He says that his classroom “Explore”, in which he received his GED instruction, was a “safe space” to learn, as teachers actually would “stop what they were teaching” to make sure that no student was left behind.

Although Abel learned the vital skills that he needed to pass all of his GED exams, he now sees the overall value of the unlimited resources at APL. He says that his experience as a student as well as a patron has been life changing.

He now gets to live out a dream that he once thought was impossible.

AEL WORKPLACE LITERACY PROGRAM

While we are adding a spotlight to the wonderful students who have recently graduated from our AEL program we also want to thank those Tarrant County employers who are part of our Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) Workplace Literacy Program. This is a specialized program that focuses on enhancing essential competencies such as English language proficiency, reading, writing, math and digital literacy, all tailored to meet the specific needs of the employer.

Classes are conducted onsite at the employer’s location, minimizing barriers to participation, often while employees are on the clock. The curriculum is often customized to align with the company’s operational needs such as industry specific terminology, or job-related tasks. By offering classes customized to the specific needs of each business, AEL ensures that employees can effectively meet the demands of their role and contribute to workplace productivity.

The program provides qualified instructors and tailored curriculum at no cost to the employer, making it a cost-effective solution for improving workforce capabilities. Whether it’s enhancing communication skills for customer-facing roles or boosting technical competencies for operational positions, AEL classes deliver targeted learning opportunities that directly benefit both employees and their organizations.
