What to ask your student

English:

  • What are you reading? What do you think of your independent reading book so far? What locations will you be writing about in your Map Memoir?

Civics:

  • What are your free speech rights in public school? How do you pronounce “Des Moines” (as in Iowa)?
  • Meet the WTMC Civics teachers and hear about how Civics is addressing the November election!

Science:

  • How is your organization for science?
  • What have you observed in your science class? What inferences can you make based on your observations?

*Note that math class information will not be included in our 9th grade newsletters.

Academic work outside of school

In some classes, students will have regular homework. In all classes, students should expect to study and spend time working on larger projects outside of the school day. Major assignments and projects are always launched during class time so that students have a solid understanding (and successful experience) before they move forward on their own or with a small group.

  • A great time to practice study skills and complete homework is the 3:00 to 4:00 block of time at the end of the school day.

  • There are TONS of great places to study on campus: the WTMC Student Lounge/Library, Bailey Library in GM, and The Spot in the Student Center are some of students’ favorite places to go!

  • After-School Civics Tutoring Thursdays: Students can drop in most Thursdays after school to get extra help or do retakes for Civics. Here is the link to the schedule.

  • Click HERE to read a description of an active study strategy to help students practice this important skill! A new strategy will be posted each month.
Reminders
  • WTMC’s Welcome Back Day will be happening after school from approximately 3:30pm to 4:15pm on Wednesday, September 11th. Swing by Community Park on campus for lawn games, pizza, and to learn about WTMC’s clubs. More info about WTMC’s clubs and activities can be found here.

  • There will be a 9th Grade Curriculum Night happening on September 12th from 6pm to 7:30pm in Towsley Auditorium in the Morris Lawrence Building (ML). Mark your calendars and plan to visit campus to learn more about the WTMC 9th grade curriculum and meet some of the 9th grade teachers.

  • There is an exciting event coming up in the 9th Grade in late September! Students will be visiting Lake Erie during school on September 17 or September 19. More details and permission slips for this field trip will be coming soon.
