AVID Showcase - On January 29, 2019, River City High School (RCHS) hosted its annual AVID Showcase as district-wide middle school AVID classes joined in on the fun be visiting the campus, participating in fun-filled educational activities, and even bringing along some students who are new to AVID but interested in joining the program next school year.

The RCHS AVID 11th grade students put together an interactive series of activities providing the 8th graders with a comprehensive idea of what they can expect from AVID at the high school level. The middle schoolers received an in-depth tour of the school, participated in a Socratic seminar, played some team building games, and engaged in an amazing discussion with a panel of RCHS senior AVID students.

Please join us in thanking all the middle school teachers for preparing their students for the visit to RCHS and for taking time out of their day and classrooms to accompany their students on the trip. Additionally, we would like to thank all the RCHS teachers and staff involved in making this opportunity possible as well as all the RCHS students who displayed true leadership to our next generation of Raiders. #Great2bWUSD #FutureRaiders
Bridgeway Stonegate Concert Band - On December 12, 2018, the Bridgeway Stonegate Concert Band, led by band director Delores Henson, gave the premiere performance of a new composition written by composer Jeffrey Hoover titled To Celebrate Life. This composition was commissioned by the combined junior high band programs at Bridgeway Island Elementary School and Stonegate Elementary School.

This work was written in honor of the school shooting victims and people of the community of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The band students were so emotionally impacted by this unfortunate tragedy and motivated by a strong sense of compassion, purpose, and social justice to show their support. The Bridgeway Stonegate Concert Band decided they wanted to create a musical vehicle to give voice to their concerns and to remind the people of Parkland, Florida that " they are not alone."

Mr. Hoover kept a blog of the composition process including audio excerpts for the students and other individuals interested in learning more about what went into creating this work.

ABC10 February Teacher of the Month - Join us in congratulating an amazing teacher at Stonegate Elementary School, Angela Williams, for being named ABC10’s February Teacher of the Month!

To salute those who devote themselves to the teaching profession, ABC10,  Schools Financial Credit Union   and Sacramento State’s College of Education have joined forces in creating a monthly profile of an exemplary educator.

Every month, ABC10 asks viewers to nominate a teacher in their community who is making a difference in students' lives. These special teachers are showcased every second Tuesday of the month on ABC10 News at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Each monthly winner is then eligible for the title of Esquire IMAX ABC10’s Teacher of the Year award, held every May.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals - The Washington Unified School District (WUSD) is able to serve low-cost or free nutritious lunches to children each school day by participating in the  National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program  .

We need your help in order for our school district to continue receiving additional funding to support students needs.

Earned Income Tax Credit for WUSD Families - We would like to make you aware of some important resources available to eligible families in our school community. The California Revenue and Taxation Code (RTC) Section 19853(b) requires local educational agencies (LEA) that operate the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) to annually notify households about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Information Act.

Parent Engagement Workshops - It's not too late to sign up and be a part of this year's amazing parent engagement workshops as our school district partners with the  Parent Institute for Quality Engagement (PIQE) in 2019.

PIQE is hosting a series of parent workshops at Westmore Oaks Elementary School designed to educate, empower, and transform parents with strategies to more actively engage in their children’s education and strengthen parent-school collaboration in order to improve the academic success of students.

After School Child Care Services - We want to thank you for taking the time to provide us with your valuable feedback as we look to strengthen our efforts regarding after school child care.

After careful review of the input provided through the Parent and Community Survey published in December 2018, our district has been considering a number of options. One of the challenges is that our school district receives a restricted grant to offer free child care at selected school sites and due to grant restrictions, it prohibits us from offering this service to all school sites.

The mission of the Washington Unified School District, THE GATEWAY TO EXTRAORDINARY POSSIBILITIES , is to challenge and support each student to develop effective critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills as a life-long learner acting in an ethical manner to serve a broader community through a community of learners characterized by:
  • Engaging learning experiences in safe, positive environments;
  • Highly-qualified, reflective and adaptive educators;
  • A culture of innovation responsive to student needs and aspirations;
  • A community promoting family involvement, strong partnerships, and school pride.
