Special Shoutout to the WUSD Transportation Team!

Among the many celebrations throughout the month of October we would like to remind our readers that it was also School Bus Safety Awareness Month. Districts throughout California joined in the celebration by showing their appreciation for school bus drivers.
It’s important for our community to be aware of proper safety habits while riding on and sharing the road with school buses. The safety of our students is dependent upon our dedicated and well-trained school bus drivers as well as our safe and cognizant motoring community members.
On October 21st the WUSD Transportation Team held their monthly safety meeting to review policies and updates but this meeting featured a new twist—the first ever team competition (friendly competition of course) day trip check where each team conducted a thorough safety check of their school bus simulating what they do on a daily basis before hitting the road to transport our students. It was amazing to see our dedicated drivers in action, doing what they do best and having fun at the same time!
Let's give these hard-working WUSD employees a BIG THANKS for their unparalleled commitment to the services they provide our children and families every day. The next time you see a school bus driver tell them how much you appreciate their services. Keep up the good work team! #Great2bWUSD

Bridgeway Island Elementary participated in this year's
International Walk to School Day
on October 5th. The celebration began at a nearby park with kids, parents and community leaders walking together to the school campus.
Walk to School Day helps raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasizes the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. It's also a fun way to build connections between families, schools and the larger community.

Throughout the month of October our Washington Unified
Transition to Adult Living (TAL)
students partnered with the Fiery Ginger Farm to host a seasonal farm stand on Merkeley Avenue selling pumpkins grown at the farm!
The TAL Program provides Life Skills and Job Skills training to individuals with disabilities between the ages of 18-22. Students work on skills necessary to adult life, such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and finding and keeping employment. To train students effectively, TAL operates out of a house with a full kitchen and yard. Students work on functional academics such as time, money, and writing skills in a classroom setting as well. Students are taught to identify their individual life goals and to diligently work toward them by building skills necessary for long term success.

Join us in giving a big shout out to all our Washington Unified schools for successfully participating in this year’s
Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills
. On October 20th our students joined millions of people worldwide by practicing how to
Drop, Cover, and Hold On
as part of the drill.
Even though earthquakes are rare in our area they can still happen anywhere we live, work, or travel. Remembering to take the proper actions, such as "
Drop, Cover, and Hold On
", can save lives and reduce the risk of injury. Participation in the drill is a great way for our students, teachers and staff to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from an emergency situation. And special thanks to Southport Elementary for being our lead demonstration school this year!
