What's New This Month

As the leaves fall and spooky season creeps in, the scariest things lurking this October aren’t in haunted houses; they’re in inboxes and online accounts. 👻 October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect time to make sure your digital defenses are stronger than a vampire’s coffin lid.

In the rush to meet year-end deadlines, it’s easy to overlook what’s happening behind the screens. But phishing schemes, wire fraud and other cyber “ghouls” are working overtime, especially in industries like ours where sensitive information changes hands daily.

This month, we’re sharing a few reminders and resources to help keep your transactions secure and your clients protected, no garlic or silver bullets required.

Stay safe and cyber-aware,

AI, Deepfakes and the New Face of Fraud in Real Estate

The scary thing about AI is that it’s not just a weapon for the heroes to use for good. Villains can use it, too. A new white paper from Closinglock, titled “Data, Dollars, and Deepfakes,” outlines how artificial intelligence is dramatically reshaping fraud in real estate, and what professionals must do to stay ahead. ALTA breaks it down in this article.

Innovation

The software tools and technology partners you choose define your business’s competitive edge. A recent Forbes piece dives into how to assess your needs, weigh build vs. buy decisions and align your software roadmap with long-term business goals. Don’t pick the wrong tool and end up trapped in a haunted maze of integrations and sunken costs.

Mortgage Trends

After peaking above 7% in January, the average 30-year mortgage rate slid to around 6.3% by late September as the Fed made its first rate cut of 2025. While more cuts could follow, experts say the path forward depends on jobs data and inflation trends, and predict that rates aren’t likely to fall much further.

Professional Development

Tired of feeling obligated to entertain every interruption or overshare at work? This article says that learning to draw healthy lines is key. Start by clarifying your real intention, regulating your emotions and setting the tone that respect and care can coexist. It’s possible to be both candid and considerate.

Market Highlights

Summer 2025 was the strongest buyer’s market in over a decade. In August, there were roughly 506,000 more home sellers than buyers, the widest gap since records began in 2013. However, this advantage varies widely by state and may not last long: if mortgage rates continue to fall, more buyers could reenter the market and shift the balance once again.

Don’t Get Tricked This Halloween

The only scares you should face this month are in haunted houses. 🕷️ Cyber criminals are getting smarter and more savvy, but a few simple steps can help keep your data and clients protected:

  • Strengthen your passwords. Use unique, complex passwords for every account. Change them frequently and use a password manager so you don’t forget.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication. One extra login step can stop hackers in their tracks.
  • Think before you click. Verify emails and links. If it feels off, it probably is.
  • Keep systems updated. Those software updates patch the holes cybercriminals love to exploit.
  • Watch out for deepfakes. Audio or video messages that look real can be scams. Pay attention to urgency and unusual requests in these messages and always verify before acting.

Make sure your entire team follows these practices because it only takes one weak link for a hacker to get in. Staying vigilant together is the best defense against digital “tricks.”
