Happy Women's History Month! Each March, we recognize the extraordinary contributions of women who have shaped our nation and communities—leading the way in education, public service, social justice, innovation, and the empowerment of others. This year’s theme, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” highlights the importance of advancing equity across many areas, including community engagement, educational access, financial stability, environmental stewardship, and emerging green technologies.
Women veterans are an essential part of this story. Through their service, leadership, and continued commitment to their communities, they represent a powerful and enduring force for positive change. Today, nearly 230,000 women serve in the military, and more than 3 million women have served throughout U.S. history—even long before women received official recognition as permanent members of the armed forces in 1948. We encourage you to explore the stories and legacies of women who served through the Library of Congress Veterans History Project and the Military Women’s Memorial.
This month we also recognize Neurodiversity Celebration Week (March 16–20), which raises global awareness about neurological differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and Tourette syndrome. UMass Chan Medical School has resources for parents and guardians, while the Massachusetts Autism Commission also provides additional resources for neurodiverse adults.
Together, these recognitions remind us that progress is built through diverse experiences, perspectives, and voices—including the leadership and service of women veterans.
In Solidarity,
Jessica A. Frost
