July LinkUp Orientation

Greetings Watershed Friends,

WVP was founded in 2012. Since its beginning, the program has engaged hundreds of volunteers across the Emerald Necklace. Every year, WVP hosts a series of information and orientation sessions called "LinkUps" for new volunteers to join the program. WVP will host its first LinkUp sessions of the year on Monday, July 11th and Saturday, July 23rd.

If you are looking to get involved with a watershed group, WVP is a great place to start your watershed journey. We welcome you to join us at an upcoming July LinkUp! Whether you are a new, experienced, or prospective volunteer, we thank you for your stewardship and look forward to engaging with you in the near future.

Please reach out to us at wvpinfo@clevelandmetroparks.com to let us know how stewardship has changed your year.

Best,

Bre Turner(she/her)

Community Science Assistant

Watershed Reflections

Things have been heating up the past few weeks but we are so impressed by the volunteers who decided to beat back the heat while also beating back the invasive Yellow Flag Iris along the North Chagrin Nature Center shorelines. Thank you for your efforts!

Stewards also beat the heat by hanging out in the shade of Mill Stream Run Reservation while learning and actively assisting with our Headwater Stream monitoring program. They refreshed their QHEI (habitat) skills and learned about the IBI (fish) monitoring protocol. The fish scored on the high end of "fair" indicating lower than ideal water quality, while the habitat scored on the low end of "good" despite a low variety of instream habitat. Notably 8 native species were collected and 44 state threatened central bigmouth shiners were caught (6.77% of the total catch).

Kudos to the 20 stewards who recorded independent June hours monitoring water chemistry in the Cahoon Porter, Euclid Creek, Rocky River and Tinker's Creek watersheds, tackling invasive plants, maintaining green infrastructure and assisting with our Enews (another great volunteer opportunity that can be done while staying cool!)
