Spotting Spotted Lanternfly

Watershed Stewards can help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly (SLF) while they are in the field. These invasive insects pose a threat to habitats and agriculture. SLF has spread to 15 states since it was first detected in Berks County, PA, outside of Philadelphia in 2014. It was most likely introduced through imported wood or stone products. This native of Asia was sighted in Ohio at Mingo Junction in 2020.

The rate of its spread has been extremely rapid. To put it in perspective, it took the invasive Gypsy Moth 100 years to cover a similar amount of territory. Its preferred host plant is the Tree of Heaven, which itself is an invasive plant. Tree of Heaven is also a prolific spreader, who bears a similarity to our native Staghorn Sumac. It secretes toxic chemicals into the soil that kill surrounding plants, similar to Black Walnut. It also resists being cut down by sending out multiple root sprouts when damaged. Controlling Tree of Heaven is important but it won’t stop SLF, who also feed on maple, oak, and crop producing plants such as hops, apple trees and grapevine. You can find more resources through Ohio Department of Agriculture, Ohio Department of Natural Resources and our Cleveland Metroparks website.

What can you do if you come across these insects or their eggs while you’re out? Take a picture or collect a sample and file a report to the ODA’s Plant Pest Control form here. Then destroy these intruders by smashing them or dropping eggs masses into rubbing alcohol.

As far as getting out in nature, take a look at our schedule of upcoming events below.

Mysterious Orange Substance in Countryman's Creek/Big Creek Confluence

On September 25th, Cleveland Museum of Natural History affiliate researcher, Dr. Bob Carr noticed a thick, foul smelling orange substance during a scouting expedition and reported it to Cleveland Metroparks Department of Natural Resources. After scrutiny by Aquatic Research Coordinator, Claire Weldon, it was determined to be a harmless natural phenomenon. She explained that iron floc occurs when natural mats of iron-oxidizing bacteria are exposed to oxygen in slow flowing water. Since we hadn’t had a sizable rainfall that would have increased surface water runoff for around three weeks, it allowed groundwater sources to add more iron-rich water to the stream undiluted. This caused the harmless bloom that will dissipate with the next major rain event.

As WVP volunteers, we’re vigilant to changes that happen in our watershed. It’s a relief when a suspicious shift in an urban stream turns out to be a natural occurrence.
