Join Cleveland Metroparks "Parks for Pollinators" throughout September

All WVP Volunteers and Watershed Friends are invited to join the Cleveland Metroparks' "Parks for Pollinators" team. Every day in September, we'll be documenting pollinator species in our 18 reservations.

How to take part:

Once you've joined, every time you take a photo with iNaturalist, it will automatically filter it into the group if it's a pollinator or flowering plant. From there, the online community will weigh in with identification suggestions.

What to look for:

Bats (Order Chiroptera)

Beetles (Order Coleoptera)

Flies (Order Diptera)

Ants, Bees, Wasps, and Sawflies (Order Hymenoptera)

Butterflies and Moths (Order Lepidoptera)

Plants Kingdom (Plantae)

Hummingbirds Family (Trochilidae)

Where to look:

Anywhere in the Cleveland Metroparks

When to look:

Now through September 30th

How to record your hours:

Log all independent "Parks for Pollinators" hours under (S)upplemental

At the close of the month, we'll celebrate together with a WVP Pollinator Bioblitz on Sunday, September 29th from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. at the Watershed Stewardship Center in Westcreek Reservation.

Sci Fri Outside Beech Tree Lecture and Survey

Science Friday has designed a nature experience all about a well-loved species of the northeast: Beech trees! Join the popular radio program's SCI FRI Outside event at the North Chagrin Nature Center to learn about these local wonders, and how you can help forestry researchers with a bit of your time and keen observation skills. If you've ever wondered how the trees in your neighborhood are doing—or even what kind of trees they are to begin with—and how you might be able to help them, this event is for you!

WVP Volunteers will not register for this event through volgistics, please register here for free tickets. We will record your attendance on the day of the event.

Meet the Shoebill – a human-sized African bird that eats baby crocodiles, often

The Bangweulu Wetlands in Zambia contain a little over 200 Shoebill individuals. A conservation program is in place for them, centering around maintaining/growing the population. One highlight of the program is the prevention of reared birds from becoming habituated to humans. To accomplish this, a creative approach was taken involving a former worker for The Muppet Show's Jim Henson! The article directly above has the details.
