The before and after...

Greetings Watershed Stewards,

Our Monday MeetUp on June 26th will offer us a chance to see a pre-construction restoration site at the 2,000 linear ft. Polo Fields Project. Afterward, we'll visit an example of a lush and complete restoration site at Forest Ridge Preserve Stream. It's an opportunity to compare the difference that the re-creation of successful floodplains and the planting of native fauna can make.

As WVP volunteers, we're often afforded the opportunity to experience the satisfaction of before and after on a more individual scale through our (R)estoration work. We will be starting a Green Infrastructure Gardening Series. It kicks off with a Green Infrastructure 101 Training on July 7th with events from July 9th - August 27th. Every Sunday from 9-11am, you can join our Green Infrastructure Team at the rotating locations of West Creek, Wildwood, North Chagrin, Brookside and Huntington. We'll have a chance to see how the locations change over the course of the summer and to see the effect of our efforts on them. Look for more information on this series in our next newsletter.

Thanks to our Salt Watch sampling volunteers who have finished our first season working with the Izaak Walton League. You can see the aftereffects of our monitoring work during their Salt Watch Season 6 Wrap-Up, listed in our (S)upplemental events below.

We look forward to seeing you at an event soon!

With great appreciation,

Sara Corrigan

Watershed Spotlight

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) is an interagency effort, led by the U.S. EPA, focused on preserving and protecting the Great Lakes. Every 5 years, EPA and federal partners publish a GLRI Action Plan, which outlines key priorities within the following focus areas: (1) Toxic Substances and Areas of Concern, (2) Invasive Species, (3) Nonpoint Source Pollution Impacts on Nearshore Health, (4) Habitat and Species, and (5) Foundations for Future Restoration Actions. The 4th Action Plan will be released for public review in the winter. EPA is currently welcoming the public to share their feedback, goals, and concerns with them to incorporate into the next action plan. Please visit glri.us for more information.

Todd Nettesheim, deputy director of EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office, stresses the importance of working with local partners and incorporating multiple skillsets and backgrounds to restore and protect the Great Lakes. A big shoutout to Todd from U.S. EPA for sharing his knowledge of GLRI with us.

This array of worms is just some of the newly discovered life forms found in the Pacific

natural chemistry than terrestrial ones; but, as the article directly above outlines, we may never

get to thoroughly explore that opportunity here because of deep sea mining slated to occur in the area.
