Hello, Watershed Stewards.
My name is Taelor Benoit and I have recently joined the Watershed Volunteer Program (WVP) team as a seasonal crew member. I’ve been a WVP member since April 2021 and for the next several months I’ll be assisting Lisa and Bre with various aspects of the program. I’m very excited to continue to be involved with WVP and learn more about how to protect NEO watersheds.
In 2005, after my community survived Hurricane Katrina, I became very interested in the ways that protecting and restoring the environment could reduce the damaging effects of hurricanes. In 2013, I worked with Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program to create a youth-activism group called the Wetland Warriors. We primarily focused on organizing plantings, invasive species removal, and educational events for Louisiana natives on the effects Climate Change has on Louisiana’s sinking coastline–which currently loses a football field size piece of land every hour (click here for reference).
In addition to my interest in the environment, I graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2019 and now spend much of my time creating paintings of Louisiana’s wildlife, which is a traditional subject matter of Cajun art, or learning the oral history of my culture.
I’m looking forward to learning and doing more with WVP during the coming months and to getting to know old and new members at our upcoming events.

GROUNDWATER was the theme of this year's World Water Day. Groundwater is a natural resource that remains out of sight, but should definitely not remain out of mind. While being invisible to most people, its impact is visible everywhere. WWD has issued a challenge to get your thoughts on this extremely important component of humanity's freshwater needs. You can read more about the challenge here. Also, we hope to see you at the Watershed Stewardship Center's post-WWD celebration on March 26 from noon - 4 p.m.
