Special Menu for Day of the Languages!

Our kitchen has created a special menu for Wednesday, March 1 to coincide with the Day of the Languages. The Chef also put time into sharing the history and cooking methods behind the menu items (see below).

International Day - Caribbean Menu

Jerk Chicken: Jamaican seasoned grilled chicken

Rice and Peas: Black beans and rice

Callaloo: Greens stewed down in coconut Milk

Vegan Ital Stew: Rastafarian stew made with carrot, cabbage, sweet potato, peppers, and coconut milk

Jerk Chicken, Rice and Peas, Callaloo, and Ital Stew are all significant dishes in Jamaica and the Caribbean, with deep historical and cultural roots. These dishes are a reflection of the region's diverse cultural heritage and have become an important part of its culinary tradition.

 

Jerk Chicken is a dish that originated in Jamaica, and is made by marinating chicken in a spicy mixture of herbs and spices, then grilling or smoking it over pimento wood. This cooking method and seasoning blend were developed by the Maroons, a group of escaped slaves who lived in the mountains of Jamaica in the 17th and 18th centuries. Jerk Chicken is now a staple dish in Jamaica and is enjoyed throughout the Caribbean.

Rice and Peas is another Jamaican staple, and a common side dish in many Caribbean countries. It consists of rice cooked with beans, coconut milk, and various herbs and spices, and is often served alongside Jerk Chicken or other meats

Callaloo is a traditional Caribbean dish made from leafy greens, such as taro or amaranth, cooked with coconut milk, herbs, and spices. It is a staple dish in Jamaica and other Caribbean countries and is often served as a side dish or used as a base for soups and stews.

Both Callaloo and Rice and Peas have roots in West Africa and were brought to the Caribbean by enslaved Africans.

Ital Stew is a vegetarian stew that is a staple in Rastafarian cuisine, which originated in Jamaica. It is made from a variety of vegetables, such as sweet potato, cabbage, and carrot, cooked with coconut milk and a blend of herbs and spices. Ital stew is a significant dish for Rastafarians, who believe in a natural and healthy lifestyle that includes a plant-based diet. The term "Ital" comes from the word "vital," and emphasizes the importance of natural, whole foods for health and well-being.

Day of the Languages

Wednesday, March 1 from 12:55-3pm

Our annual Day of the Languages will take place next week on Wednesday from 12:55 - 3 pm. This afternoon program is a wonderful event for our students in grades 7-12. It carries with it a carnivalesque quality of turning the world upside-down by putting on short skits in Spanish and German.

All students in grades 8-12 are involved in putting on the show - writing their own skits, making props, planning the set-up, learning lines, improvising, and getting through any stage fright to bring forth the amazing acts that day! Singing and clowning will be part of the shows. Making fun of things, creating wild encounters, and doing it all in a non-native language makes for many funny moments!

All parents are invited to come to the event. No one younger than Grade 7 (except for babies) will be admitted to the auditorium. Please understand our protective gesture of keeping this event for older students only. Come to the auditorium by 12:55pm to grab a seat and enjoy the Day of the Languages!

Undoing Racism Workshop at WWS

Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5, from roughly 9am-5pm

WWS and the Undoing Racism Working Group are hosting an in-person Undoing Racism Workshop, led by PISAB at WWS

The workshop is almost full, and we will form a waitlist for those interested.

We are in the process of planning a "College Connections Fair" for the benefit of our high school students to be held at school on Wednesday, March 29 from Noon to 1:15 pm. The purpose of this in-house fair is to allow members of our community to share their personal experiences at their alma maters with our students who are eager to learn about universities or other institutions of higher education such as service academies, art colleges, conservatories of music, etc. Please note: this is an informal event and official representatives of colleges or educational programs are not participating.

Colleges represented from sign ups so far: California Institute of the Arts, Hofstra University, Kalamazoo College, Purdue University, Syracuse University, United States Military Academy, Williams College

The “Views of Splendor: Washington Waldorf Spring Gala” will take place in the evening on Saturday, April 15. This year, the Gala is located at Top of the Town in Arlington, Virginia boasting spectacular views of DC’s monuments.

In addition to attending the Gala, there are a few ways you can participate in the preparations:

Contribute to your Class Basket

Each class K-8 and the High School is being asked to put together a themed basket to support the Gala. Each basket will be raffled off at the Gala. You need not attend the Gala to win a basket. Look for communication through the PLG and your class parent about how you can contribute.

Attend or Host a Buy-In Party

A Buy-In Party is an activity with a set ticket price and date. Anyone can buy a ticket—it is first come, first served. The Buy-In Parties will represent a broad range of interests and ticket prices. Past Buy-In Parties include walking tours, family cookouts, classes, dinners, and children’s activities. Want to organize or sponsor an event? Contact Maria Monteverde-Jackson via email at [email protected]. You may also download the host form and return it to Maria.

Event Sponsorship

If you own a business or are closely associated with one, please contact the Development Office if the business is interested in sponsorship and/or advertising in the Gala program. Business sponsorships begin at $500.

If you know someone outside the immediate WWS community (including friends and grandparents) who might be interested in attending the Gala, send the person’s name and email address to [email protected]. We will add them to the invitation list!

A special thank you to everyone who donated to our first Hearts and Homes collection event on Sunday, February 19th. A total of 46 lbs of donations were received. Thank you!  

The next drive will take place on Sunday, March 5 from 1-3pm in the WWS parking lot. I hope to see you there!

The goal of the Hearts and Homes project is to collect a wide variety of unneeded household items and clothing to help under-resourced families and keep useful items out of the landfill. Read a welcome letter from Robin and see donation guidelines.

Whiffletree Farm delivers orders monthly (first Tuesday of the month) to the home of a WWS family, just around the corner from the school. They offer meat, eggs, cheese, and a variety of other farm products. Items are local (Warrenton, VA), pasture-raised, non-GMO, raised with sustainable land practices.

The Fatherhood Circle Group for Dads

The Fatherhood Circle provides guided small groups for dads to de-stress, connect with other thoughtful and motivated dads, and explore some of the most important issues related to fatherhood. Groups convene for a series of five meetings. On Sunday in person in Takoma Park and online on Thursday evenings and Friday afternoons. It's perfect for WWS dads looking to deepen their connection to fatherhood and meet dads like them!
