The gates of dawn have opened and the air is filled with light
And in the valley lying are the shadows of the night
The plants are stretching upward to greet the warming sun
And thankfulness lives in our hearts, in the heart of everyone.
-from “The Gates of Dawn”, sung at our opening assembly this morning.

Name/Grade Placards

Please be sure to put a placard in your dashboard with your child(ren)'s name(s) and grade(s) clearly written or printed. If you are walking to pick up, please carry the placard with you.

This helps us at drop off as we check to ensure everyone coming to campus has completed the health screening form.

The placards also help at pick up so we can read them quickly when we call to the teacher on the walkie talkie. This helps keep traffic flowing.

If you didn't receive any cardstock for your placard(s) today, feel free to ask for some. You can also use your own heavy stock paper.

*Thanks to the Kozlowskis for having a great example for us to share!

Welcome from the WWS Leadership Council for Diversity, Equity and Social Justice
The WWS Leadership Council for Diversity, Equity and Social Justice (LC4DESJ) offers a warm welcome to our new and returning families as we begin a new academic year together!

We honor the strength and kindness that live in our community as well as the courage to innovate possibilities yet unseen. In these fragile times, and as we start a new year, the LC4DESJ reaffirms our steadfast commitment to the important and difficult work of diversity, equity and social justice at our school. It is a commitment grounded in anti-racist practices. We extend an invitation to our entire community to help take up this work together because we understand that the meaningful transformations we seek are not possible without this work carried as a collective act, rather than alone in a specific committee as is often the case.  With this in mind, the LC4DESJin conjunction with the Parent Leadership Group (PLG) and the faculty Anti-Racist Curriculum Group, will be offering ways to get involved as the year moves forward. Please look out for our notices that will be circulated via ParentSquare and/or the weekly Bulletin.  In the meantime, we wish our students, faculty, and staff a great first week!
Welcome Gifts
In lieu of an in person Welcome Tea event, this morning we passed out WWS mugs with tea, honey, and cookies (one per family). If you didn't receive one and would like one, please let us know!

What was in the mug?
  • Two honey sticks from The Bee Folks in Mount Airy, MD.
  • Two tea bags from the Eastern Shore Tea Company in Baltimore, MD.
  • Two packs of Biscoff cookies - no local connection we know of, but they are delicious and we appreciate that they are still a family run company with serious goals towards sustainability.
New students should have received a welcome bag today. (If you have more than one new student it would have come home with the eldest.) There should be a bag for each student, a bit of WWS swag, and a packet of information about various aspects of life at WWS for the family. If you didn't see one come home, please let us know!
AWSNA Alumni Networking & Events
Do you know about the Waldorf Alum Networking Platform & The Continental Waldorf Alum Business Directory? Both are centralized resources for alumni from Waldorf schools across North America and they are offered by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA).

AWSNA also hosts periodic events for alumni and alumni families. Learn more about their next offerings below...
Waldorf Alum Networking Hour

These conversations are bi-monthly virtual events with different topics. Over the summer there was a panel on "Sustainable and Socially Conscious Business, Finance, and Entrepreneurship" - If you were unable to attend, you can view a recording of the conversation.
Event for Waldorf High School Students & Young Waldorf Alums
AWSNA is still looking for young alum participants for the October event. Connect with current high school students! Share your experience, wisdom and insight on life after Waldorf. Contact Nita to be a panelist and inspire the next generation!

CSA Sign Ups for Biodynamic/Organic Food
(pick up near WWS or a location near you!)
shared by Sunny Kaplan (WWS Alumni Parent)

There are still a few shares available for the CSA! Different options are: school year only (Sept-May), winter/spring season (Dec-May) and summer. Call or email first to confirm availability--once confirmed, registration info is here (a discount is available if you pay with cash/check).

What's the CSA? Spiritual Foods CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) provides biodynamic and organic veggies, fruit, eggs, bread and other seasonal staples, with most of it grown on land leased from the Kimberton Waldorf School in PA! Biodynamics, like Waldorf education, was founded by Rudolf Steiner and is a spiritual-ethical-ecological approach to agriculture, food production and nutrition. Choices for share options include: main share of veggies, fruit & supplements; main share w/out bread; or veggie/fruit only. Please visit the CSA website for more info, costs, and registration forms, or email or call Lakshmi at 301-654-4899 with questions and to check on availability. You can also reach out to Sunny Kaplan, WWS alumni parent and WWS/CSA coordinator.

A New Screen Strong Parent Group is Forming!
from Sarah Vakkur (WWS Parent)

This group will help support parents as we navigate technology with our children. It will also help children socialize without their phones or tech. I joined this national/international group this summer to get additional support raising my teenagers in the pandemic. It is excellent and I am now a local rep for the DC area. If you would like more info see screenstrong.com , and e-mail me at [email protected] with the subject “ScreenStrong”.

Our local group will offer a parent group for sharing information and ideas and also a teen group to offer social opportunities without the use of phones, video games or screens.
