Head of School News!
Last week the Trustees Council announced the exciting news that Lelia True, the school’s current Operations Manager, has accepted their offer to serve as the Interim Head of School during the 2021-2022 school year after Jennifer Page steps down as Faculty Chair and Head of School at the end of June.

Lelia is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and earned a Bronze Star while commanding a tactical communications company during Desert Storm. Lelia also has a master’s degree in business from Purdue University and has over 20 years of corporate work experience. After beginning her Waldorf journey as a Children’s Garden parent (her son is now in the WWS high school), she became our Operations Manager in 2017. Lelia has completed the Waldorf Education Foundation Studies course and is a member of the WWS College of Teachers. She has also coached our basketball and swimming teams and serves as the middle school math assistant teacher.

After joining the staff, Lelia quickly made a big impact on the school and our community, and brings a solid understanding of the school, its mission, and our community to the job. Lelia and Jennifer have been a great team and led our school through this incredibly difficult time with the global pandemic. They will continue to work closely over the next two months as Lelia transitions into her new role.

The role that Lelia will step into encompasses responsibility and oversight for the legal, financial, business and operations aspects of the school’s operation. In that capacity, she is charged with the day-to-day management and leadership of the school.

To help support Lelia in her new role, there will be several changes in staff responsibilities, with some taking on additional responsibilities. Of particular note is that Kate Knuth, our current seventh grade teacher and leader of our anti-racist curriculum workgroup, will serve as Interim College Chair to help guide the College of Teachers in furthering the pedagogical work of the school. Kate will also continue teaching her soon-to-be eighth grade class.

Let's all join the Trustees Council in congratulating Lelia and Kate on their new positions!
New Mascot Graphics Unveiled
Our new mascot graphics were unveiled at the gala this past weekend.
See below for a limited time offer on mascot gear!
About 40 years ago, our boys and girls athletic teams needed a name for when they played other schools. The teachers thought the choice should rest with the students. The Knight mascot was chosen by the students in grades 5-8 from among several choices. Over the decades, the Knight has been visualized in various ways but we had not formalized an original set of mascot graphics until now.

From Jennifer Page's remarks at the Gala:

"...what does it mean to have a knighthood in 2021? Certainly, history has not always portrayed knights in a positive light. Some images we would seek to emulate, others we would not. But here at WWS, we strive to express a different kind of knighthood. A knighthood not based on gender, race, sexual orientation, or other classification. Instead WWS knighthood is one that values service, compassion, caring for others, having the courage to speak the truth when doing so is difficult, being willing to be an upstander, being resilient in the face of challenges, being tolerant for the mistakes of others, being brave when times are hard, and many more. These are the qualities and attributes we strive to emulate and we want our students to embody and express as they grow and develop. During the pandemic crisis, we have seen these qualities in our students. We have seen them in all of you. These are the seeds for the future, the hope for humanity and the care of our world."
Thank You for a Wonderful Gala!

Special Thanks to Maria...

Once again this year's gala was like no other. A special thank you to Maria Monteverde-Jackson for her tireless work to create 10 galas these last ten years for our school. Each event had a unique theme and setting, always with little somethings that made them fun, elegant, and memorable. We are grateful for her professionalism, dedication, and creativity in putting on these spring events to raise essential dollars for both financial aid and our operating budget. Congratulations on a job well done!
