Grade 3 Chalkboard Drawing by Class Teacher Lauryn Morley

Giving Thanks Assembly

This afternoon Grades 1-12 gathered in the auditorium for an assembly before the Thanksgiving break. Dawn Tanner (G8 Class Teacher) shared thoughts on Thanksgiving celebrations along with a land acknowledgment. She shared stories from her own childhood, about having gratitude for the harvest, and the understanding of the depth and importance of what our stories and traditions have often left unrecognized. Grade 6 performed Autumn from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, Grade 3 gave a Eurythmy presentation, and the High School Chorus sang Thank You for the Music by ABBA (with a solo from Lelia True!). Grades 1-5 recited graces/blessings that they say before meals. Grades 7-12 recited the Haudenosaunee Native American Thanksgiving Address. The assembly concluded with a rousing rendition of Over the River and Through the Wood.

Grade 7 Math

The seventh graders are exploring ratios in their math skills class with Ms. Heirman. Yesterday they brought in bread they made at home following a simple 5 to 3 ratio recipe. The "ooos" and "ahhs", thumbs up, and smiles were evidence of a resounding success.

  • Fri 12/28-9:15am & 2:30-3:15pm

The Waldorf Store will also be open for online shopping December 3 through 5pm on December 16. Online purchases will be available for pick up at the school through December 20.

Mail your holiday packages - without standing in line at the Post Office - while supporting WWS.

Here’s a chance to mail your holiday packages, hassle-free, and generate a contribution to WWS. On December 1 and 2, Peter Karpoff, WWS Alum Parent, once again will be in the school foyer with mailing boxes, tape, and stamps. You will pay the normal cost of Priority Postage; Peter will contribute 20% of the stamp value to the School.

How is this possible, you ask? Peter has access to hundreds of dollars of unused stamps through the Silver Spring Stamp Club from bequests and consignments. The owners accept less than full value for these stamps and thus the chance for the school to benefit.

So, bring your items to be mailed, with addresses (!), and we will get them to the Post Office. You’ll pay $17 for a Medium box or $22.45 for a Large box for Priority service to US addresses. Lightweight packages (1.5 to 2 lbs.) can be sent for a bit less. Peter will email you a copy of the Post Office receipt with the tracking information. If your contents are not yet ready to mail by Nov. 30, you can come and purchase a box with postage attached and take it to the P.O. yourself when you are ready. Same 20% benefit to WWS. Same opportunity for Holiday cards. Bring them in for 60 cents, and WWS will earn 20% as well (or again, take some stamps home).

Mark you calendar for December 1 and 2 to get your mailings underway!

Lunch Music

The Music Faculty cordially invites you to our November Lunch Music offering.

Wednesday, Nov 30 at 12:15pm

This month, both the High School and Lower School will present short programs. Since the HS and LS have lunch at staggered times, there will be a brief pause between performances as follows:

  • HS Guitars (12:15 - 12:25)
  • Pause (12:25-12:45)
  • G7/G8 Chamber Strings Ensemble (12:45- 12:55)

Please feel free to come to the auditorium, bring your lunch and stay for the music. All are welcome and may come and go (quietly please). Masks are optional and will be provided. We recommend that community members mask when not actively eating or drinking as the auditorium can be quite a full house!

Any questions can be sent to Jennifer Robinson.

Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is one week away on Tuesday, November 29th!

This worldwide celebration of collective generosity is an important part of our annual OneFund campaign, which supports day to day operations and Financial Aid at our school. Plus, this year, we are also raising the remaining funds needed to complete our Gym. We will communicate more details on how to participate next week!

Alum News

Brandon Tapia ('20) was one of a few select undergraduate chemical engineering students across the US invited to present at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' Annual Meeting this past week in Phoenix, Arizona.

Brandon is a junior in chemical engineering at Virginia Tech, minoring in green engineering and economics. He presented his research on carbon capture at the event.

Nick Kendall (‘97), as part of the band "Time For Three", received two nominations for the 65th Grammy Awards. Their album, Letters for the Future, was nominated for BEST CLASSICAL INSTRUMENTAL SOLO as well as BEST CONTEMPORARY CLASSICAL COMPOSITION.

The fall 2022 edition of School Renewal magazine (published by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America) features an article on Likolani Brown Arthurs (Class of 2003) who is doing her surgical residency at NYU after 15 years dancing with the New York City Ballet. Read a NY Post article about Likolani from earlier this year.

The School Renewal magazine also features spotlight pieces on WWS alums Robert Amico (Class of 2011) and Nick Kendall ('97). You can peruse a copy of the magzine in the WWS foyer after shopping at the WWS store!

Do you have an alum update to share or new contact information? We'd love to hear from you. Please send us your news of awards or honors, new family members, scholarships, travels and adventures, jobs or other milestones.
