PBS: A Short Guide to Cell Phone Safety and Wireless Radiofrequency

We use cell phones and technology everyday. We want our children to use technology responsibly but often feel overwhelmed. What are strategies that we can use at home to minimize potential risks? Why are over a dozen countries educating parents on cell phone safety?

Date: Thursday, Oct 24, 2019
Where: Washington Waldorf School Library
Time: 7:30pm

WWS will host a community conversation along with the screening of a 2019 PBS series on cell phones, wireless, sleep, cancer, and addiction featuring Burt Wolf interviewing international experts. Several US states and countries have now passed laws to investigate the health effects of wireless technology and have issued practical information on how to reduce risks and promote healthier technology. Resources for parents include common sense practical strategies. Medical doctors recommend addressing technology to support sleep, memory and learning in children.

School Calendar
Staying Up to Date With Our School Calendar

The .pdf version of the school calendar can be a great resource, but did you know that it evolves as the year goes on and that from time to time it is necessary for us to shift dates? We try our best to plan and predict what the school year will bring, but there are always changes that need to be made.
You can view the calendar online either on the website , in ParentSquare , or in the BigSis portal (these 3 platforms are automatically synced from the same calendar).

If you use the .pdf version of the calendar, please check in from time to time to make sure you have the most up to date version! Whenever there are changes we update the .pdf version online and we post the revision date. The most recent change is that the Lower School Instrumental Music Concert will now be held on March 4th.

Bazaar Highlight - Wood Craft

One of the themes of our school's 50th anniversary celebration (and Waldorf 100) is bees. Bees were chosen because of their hard work and dedication to building community and all they do to maintain our world's beauty and bounty. Sounds like another community we all know and love - our WWS community! This year we will be paying homage to bees at the bazaar in various ways. One way will be through this year's wood craft project.  Jamal Kadri , father to Grace in 3rd grade and Elise in 1st grade, is preparing 75 mason bee homes that children will be able to construct at the bazaar in the Wood Craft activity. Jamal has done hours of research and outreach to beekeepers to come up with a design that is both easy to construct and sound in its design. Each child that creates a mason bee house will not only have a beautiful bee home to take with them, they will also have information telling them the best place to hang their home as well as how to care for it and maintain it. Increasing native bee populations is one of the ways we as a community can support our local ecosystem and attracting native bees is an easily attainable and a super rewarding experience. We hope you and your child will participate in this craft at the Fall Bazaar!

International Student Seeking a Portable Piano

Gergő is an international guest student from Hungary, who joined the WWS 10th Grade a few weeks ago and who will stay until December 22.

At home in Hungary, Gergő played the piano and practiced every day. It's really important to him so we are looking for a portable piano. In order to play the pieces he has learnt, he needs one with 88 fully weighted keys, a stand, and a single pedal. Looking to borrow or rent until he returns home in December.

Thank you in advance & best regards,
Balazs Tokar & Piroska Sipos
