From The GM
|
|
We closed out the Spring drive at midnight on Sunday with $67,489.13 collected! That's an amazing achievement considering the state of the economy and the fact that the closure of the UHart campus dramatically limited our ability to fund raise.
Thank you to every who donated. Your incredible generosity will enable to continue to bring you quality alternative radio programming.
We continue to operate "remotely" with many programs being produced at home by our volunteers. We still don't know for sure when we will be able to resume live programming but rest assured we will do so as soon as it is safe to do so.

It's our music: old and new, loud and mellow, foreign and domestic. Thanks for allowing us to help you with the soundtrack to your Friday morning.

DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA
FOR A RADIO PROGRAM?
|
|
If you have an idea for a radio program and are available to volunteer late at night, please let us know.
We may have some midnight and/or 3am slots available later this year. Email station manager John Ramsey to find out more about this unique and exciting opportunity for the right person.
Qualified candidates will have access to the full WWUH programmer orientation program so no experience is necessary. He/she will also need to attend the monthly WWUH staff meetings (held on Tuesday or Sunday evenings) and do behind the scenes volunteer work from time to time. This is a volunteer position.
After completing this process, we will review the candidate's assets and accomplishments and they will be considered for any open slots in our schedule.

The WWUH Scholarship Fund
|
|
In 2003 WWUH alums Steve Berian, Charles Horwitz and Clark Smidt helped create the WWUH Scholarship Fund to provide an annual grant to a UH student who is either on the station's volunteer Executive Committee or who is in a similar leadership position at the station. The grant amount each year will be one half of the revenue of the preceeding year.

We take a root and branch approach to Americana and you are likely to hear folk, blues, old country and honky tonk, no depression, soul, roots rock, singer/songwriter, lo-fi, hi fi, bluegrass and every other cool thing we can think of. It's our music: old and new, loud and mellow, foreign and domestic. Thanks for joining us for some predawn, free-form adventures in modern twang.
Here are some of our music features for the month of June:
June 5: Willie's Back Pages. The man has 94 studio albums (solo and collaborations). We can't claim to have heard every minute, but we've picked out some gems on the lesser known or forgotten ones fro this morning's program.
June 12: Philadelphia International. We will bring you blues and soul from this 1970's label in the 4 o'clock hour.
June 19: Songs from Albums that Can Drink. Hard to believe that these songs were released in 1999 and are now officially oldies (I guess).
June 26: No Depression... was the name of a highly influential print magazine and, now, an online journal. No one ever defined what the term "no-depression music" was too well, but we know it when we hear it and we'll play some examples for you as a spiritual resource.

Jimmy Cobb(January 20, 1929 - May 24, 2020)
|
|
The last surviving member of Miles Davis' sextet on Kind of Blue, passed away from lung cancer on May 24, 2020. He was 91. Born in Washington D.C he began his long career with Earl Bostic. He later played with Dinah Washington, Wynton Kelly, Keter Betts, Charlie Rouse, Frank Wess , Cannonball Adderley and others.Cobb was referred to Miles Davis in 1957 and eventually recorded Kind Of Blue in 1959. He is the last surviving member of that sextet. He later worked with Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers as a trio, along with Kenny Burrell and JJ Johnson. Cobb taught at Stanford, Berklee School of Music and the University of North Carolina. The list of musicians that Jimmy Cobb played with reads like a Who's Who of jazz. He played and recorded almost up to his death, releasing an album last year on Smoke Sessions Records. Wilbur James Cobb died in Manhattan at home and is survived by his wife, Eleana Steinberg Cobb and two daughters.
