   YFLA Class of 2018

Young Women Writing for(a) Change ® is proud to announce that eight strong and independent young women graduated from the Young Feminist Leadership Academy (YFLA) on April 22nd, 2018. Led by YWFLA graduates Meg Stentz and Liv Linn, the graduates started the program in December of 2017, and completed it in April, naming their cohort Boat Jumpers. To further put into practice what they have learned, several graduates will be assisting in our summer writing camps.

Congratulations, Boat Jumpers: YFLA Class of 2018!

Gratitude and Welcome

Gratitude to Janie Baer
We are sad to announce that Janie Baer has retired  from her position a s Executive Assistant. Since late 2015, Janie has been an immense support in keeping the office running smoothly. She will be missed by all. Happily, there is good news: this is not truly a goodbye, as Janie has been invited to return to the WWf(a)C Board of Trustees. Many thanks for the multiple facets of your service to WWf(a)C, Janie!

Welcome, Lisa Rocklin
Women Writing for (a) Change is excited to announce that Lisa Rocklin has been hired to fill a newly created staff position, that of Associate Director! In this capacity, she will take on overflow duties of the Executive Director, in addition to some of the duties previously carried out by Janie Baer.

Lisa found her way to a WWf(a)C Saturday Sampler in 2006. From that first circle, it was wonderfully obvious that her writing voice had found a home. Formerly an English teacher at McAuley High School, she has a BA in English and an MA in Secondary Education from Northern Kentucky University. Prior experience includes managing customer service teams and hiring and training market research staff.

Lisa is a 2015 graduate of the Conscious Feminine Leadership Academy. Supporting girls to cultivate their authentic selves through writing is a passion she pursues as a facilitator of teens' and young women's classes. She lives in Mt. Healthy with her husband Tony and dogs Daisy and Hazel.

A very big welcome to Lisa!
Transforming Young Women's Lives

WWf(a)C partners with multiple organizations and programs in Greater Cincinnati to offer outreach circles. One of these, Urban Education Center in Covington, is an afterschool program that provides individual tutoring, physical exercise and "special sessions." These sessions include weekly Young Women Writing for (a) Change circles for 5th through 8th grade girls.

WWf(a)C facilitator Katherine Meyer leads these writing circles, which follow YWWf(a)C practices and procedures. The girls listen to a poem for inspiration and respond to writing prompts provided by the facilitator. They write about their lives and have the opportunity to share some or all of what they have written in a confidential space. Each circle closes with a time of reflection on the gifts and challenges of that day's writing circle.

This transformative time in girls' lives is consciously acknowledged through their writing. One young woman, Bailey, has described her journey eloquently in the following poem, included below. Through academic and writing success, Bailey has procured a scholarship to a local High School. Additionally, she has been honored for another one of her poems, Psychology of Poetry.

Warm congratulations to Bailey on her current success and recognition; and best wishes for her future writing endeavors!

Untitled
by Bailey

It's socially unacceptable to dwell on myself,
At least more than absolutely necessary,
But i am aware of a sudden, great change.
If not for the observation of others,
i wouldn't have a clue how different i look these       days.

Reports of my new behavior have come back to me
In waves, like butterflies migrating home, finally.
People say i glow, an aura of confidence.
i walk straight backed and proud,
With an air of determination about me.

Now, with eyes i never learned to love,
i look down the nose i've always hated,
At all the people who seeked to put me down,
And i realize i have something special,
