A Word from the Pastor

August 4, 2023

One of the Corporal Works of Mercy is “to bury the dead.” We also recall that Jesus bids us to comfort those who mourn. The Church wishes to accompany those who are grieving the loss of loved ones and to show the Light of Jesus Christ Risen to those whose hearts are broken. Our parish seeks to embrace those who are mourning and give guidance for the ceremonies which thank God for the deceased’s life and hold the family and friends close in prayer.

Our parish is blessed with an active Funeral Ministry. These dedicated parishioners assist families in their time of need and great loss. The members of the funeral ministry help the family of the deceased to choose readings and select music for the funeral Mass and guide them through the entire funeral process. Other members of the funeral ministry offer hospitality to family and friends who gather for the Mass of Christian Burial. In addition, they serve as adult altar servers during the Mass, leading the procession with cross and candles, presenting the bread and wine to the priest and bringing the incense at the proper time.

We are also trying to expand our funeral ministry to include follow-up and outreach to the bereaved in the weeks and months following the funeral. This also includes our annual All Souls Day Mass during which special remembrance is made of those who have died in the last year.

In order to continue and expand this very special ministry, we need additional members of our funeral team. This is a unique opportunity for those who are retired or have free time during the day. You may choose to participate in a single aspect of this ministry or get involved in several areas.

Please consider this an invitation not only from me, but also a response to the Lord’s call to comfort those who mourn. It is an opportunity to reach out with compassion and healing at a very special time in the life of a family.

If you have questions about this ministry and how you may serve, you may contact me or Maureen Simons at pmaureen.simons@gmail.com or 760-822-4478.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

World Youth Day in Lisbon

The young people from our parish stopped in France and are now in Lisbon for WYD.

World Youth Day in Lisbon

Young people are already in Lisbon and are sharing in the joy of this international gathering. Here is the link for the official theme song of WYD Lisbon 2023. It is the international version, so it is in many languages but the message is the same.

RCIA Is For You If You Are:

  • an adult (18+) who has never been part of a formal religion
  • an adult who was baptized in a faith tradition other than Catholicism
  • an adult who received some but not all of the sacraments
  • an adult who was raised in another faith and now wishes to become Catholic

We are now forming a new group of catechumens and candidates. The English group will meet on Sunday mornings beginning September 10. This is a change from our meeting date in the past. We will invite the English group to attend the 9:00 am Mass together and then stay for another hour of formation after the Mass.

Those in the English group can sign up or seek further information by contacting Fr. Ron at rmbagley@yahoo.com or 760-729-2866 or our coordinators Brick and Rebecca Langford at carlsbadrebecca@gmail.com

Grace Amazing

This is the official live performance video for “Grace Amazing,” a contemporary praise and worship song from MercyMe.

The Eucharist is the body of Christ not the body of Jesus. What we call it matters.

In this very thought-provoking article, Rev. Kevin W. Irwin, well-known teacher and priest of the Archdiocese of New York, offers some insightful clarifications about the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Learn More about the Eucharist

As a part of the Diocesan Institute, Fr. Ron Bagley will be teaching a six week course entitled The Eucharist and Sunday. It will be held here at St. Patrick Parish Center, beginning on September 12, 6:30-9:00 pm and concluding on October 24 (skipping September 26).

The course will explore the biblical and liturgical meaning of Sunday; and the Eucharist, sacrament of the Paschal Mystery, as source and summit of the Christian life. Because this course will explore the biblical, theological and liturgical foundations of the Eucharist, it is very appropriate at the beginning of the National Eucharistic Revival year.

Registration is being handled by the Diocesan Institute office. Contact them at https://sdcatholic.org/office-for/diocesan-institute/course-schedule/ or call (858) 490-8212. This course can be used for credit toward diocesan certification or for personal enrichment. If you have questions, contact Fr. Ron.

Psalm 97:1–2,5–6,9

A Song of Praise to God our King

Second Reading

2 Peter 1:16–19

Peter says that the voice heard from Heaven confirmed the truth of his testimony about Christ.

Gospel Reading

Matthew 17:1–9

Jesus is transfigured on the mountain in the presence of Peter, James, and John.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s liturgy invites us to celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This feast calls to our attention the importance of this event in Jesus’ life, further affirmed by its report in each of the Synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke. In Cycle A, the reading for this feast is taken from the Gospel of Matthew. The Transfiguration occurs after Peter confesses his belief that Jesus is the Messiah and after Jesus predicts his Passion. In each of these Gospels, a discussion of the cost of discipleship precedes the Transfiguration.

In each Gospel, Jesus takes three of his disciples—Peter, James, and John—to a high mountain. While they are there, Elijah and Moses appear and converse with Jesus. Elijah and Moses are both significant figures in the history of Israel. Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and received from Yahweh the Ten Commandments. Moses represents the Law, which guides the lives of the Jewish people. Elijah is one of the most important prophets of Israel who helped the Israelites stay faithful to Yahweh, and some believed that Elijah’s return would signal the coming of the Messiah for the Jewish people. The appearance of these two figures from Israel’s history indicated Jesus’ continuity with the Law and the prophets. They also reveal that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that was promised to the people of Israel.

Upon witnessing Jesus’ Transfiguration and seeing Jesus with Elijah and Moses, an awestruck Peter offered to construct three tents for them when a voice from Heaven affirms that Jesus is "my beloved Son" and commands the disciples to listen to him.

In each of the reports of the Transfiguration, Jesus instructed the disciples to keep secret what they had seen until after "the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." Until they witnessed Jesus’ Passion and Death, the disciples could not possibly understand what he meant by being "raised from the dead." We, however, have the benefit of hindsight. In our hearing of the Transfiguration Gospel, we see an anticipation of Jesus’ Resurrection, a foreshadowing of Christ’s glory in Heaven, and the promise of our own resurrection.

Registration weekend for Ruah Adonai - Breath of God Bible Study is August 26 and 27.

A Biblical Walk Through the Mass (5 sessions) “The Mass is nothing short of amazing.
