Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s liturgy invites us to celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This feast calls to our attention the importance of this event in Jesus’ life, further affirmed by its report in each of the Synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke. In Cycle A, the reading for this feast is taken from the Gospel of Matthew. The Transfiguration occurs after Peter confesses his belief that Jesus is the Messiah and after Jesus predicts his Passion. In each of these Gospels, a discussion of the cost of discipleship precedes the Transfiguration.

In each Gospel, Jesus takes three of his disciples—Peter, James, and John—to a high mountain. While they are there, Elijah and Moses appear and converse with Jesus. Elijah and Moses are both significant figures in the history of Israel. Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and received from Yahweh the Ten Commandments. Moses represents the Law, which guides the lives of the Jewish people. Elijah is one of the most important prophets of Israel who helped the Israelites stay faithful to Yahweh, and some believed that Elijah’s return would signal the coming of the Messiah for the Jewish people. The appearance of these two figures from Israel’s history indicated Jesus’ continuity with the Law and the prophets. They also reveal that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that was promised to the people of Israel.

Upon witnessing Jesus’ Transfiguration and seeing Jesus with Elijah and Moses, an awestruck Peter offered to construct three tents for them when a voice from Heaven affirms that Jesus is "my beloved Son" and commands the disciples to listen to him.

In each of the reports of the Transfiguration, Jesus instructed the disciples to keep secret what they had seen until after "the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." Until they witnessed Jesus’ Passion and Death, the disciples could not possibly understand what he meant by being "raised from the dead." We, however, have the benefit of hindsight. In our hearing of the Transfiguration Gospel, we see an anticipation of Jesus’ Resurrection, a foreshadowing of Christ’s glory in Heaven, and the promise of our own resurrection.

Ruah Adonai - Breath of God Bible Study is open to men and women. No previous bible study experience needed. Our mission is to know, to love and to serve God. We meet Wednesdays from 8:30 am to 10 am in the Parish Hall to view an engaging video presentation followed by a lively group discussion and fellowship. Dinner and Praise and Worship

St. Pat’s Youth Ministry would like to invite all families to participate in our dinner and praise and worship night on Sunday, August 20 immediately following the 5:00 p.m. Mass.

Dinner will be held on the patio following the 5:00 p.m. Mass and then at 6:45 p.m. we will have praise and worship in the Church until 8:00 p.m. All are welcome! We hope to see you there!

This month’s Family Mass will be on Sunday, August 13 at 9:00 am.

Bring the whole family and join in the celebration.

Confirmation Registration

The youth office will be closed July 22^nd through August 8^th due to our participation in World Youth Day. 

Families may still register their young people for Confirmation online through the parish website link below. We will begin returning emails and phone calls upon our return to the office. We thank you for understanding.

We are here to support parents in forming their children in the Catholic Faith and engage in our parish community where we worship and grow together in faith. We offer weekly classes for preschool through 8th grade and preparation for the sacraments for children in grades 1 through 8.

Un Saludo de parte del Diacono Miguel,

“Cuando aún estaba hablando, una nube luminosa los cubrió y de ella salió una voz que decía, ‘Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo puestas mis complacencias, escúchenlo’”. (San Mateo 17: 1-9). Este domingo celebramos la fiesta de la Transfiguración. Una experiencia importante para los discípulos de Jesús, especialmente para Pedro, Santiago y a Juan, que miraron con sus ojos la transfiguración de Jesús. ¿Pero qué significa la transfiguración de Jesús para nosotros? Jesús, es el Hijo de Dios, que fue enviado para salvar a la humanidad. Paga la deuda del pecado, muriendo en la cruz. Jesús no queda clavado en la cruz, tres días después resucita y asciende al cielo y está sentado en su trono al lado de su Padre para reinar eternamente. Su transfiguración señala quien es Jesús Cristo y cuál fue su misión. Creemos que Jesús nos da como herencia la Vida Eterna, que cuando pasamos de este mundo, iremos al cielo y miraremos a Jesús cara a cara. Como católicos, tenemos los siete sacramentos que señalan la Vida Eterna. En cada sacramento Dios nos dice, “Te amo, estoy contigo, no tengas miedo”. En cada sacramento recibimos la gracia para seguir caminando y compartiendo con otros lo que hemos recibido de Dios. En la vida habrá de todo y a veces que nos en ciega y no podremos ver a Dios a causa de nuestro dolor. En el Evangelio de este domingo, los discípulos a mirar cómo cambiaba Jesús se llenaron de temor, no entendían lo que estaba pasando. Pero Jesús se acerca a ellos y les dice, “Levántense y no teman”. Esas palabras son para nosotros. Escuchémoslas y llevémoslas adentro de nuestro corazón.
