Superintendent's Notes

Greetings Wabash and New South Conferences.

The Church needs spiritual movement (spontaneity) and the Church needs organizational structure (plans) in order to thrive.

And I would guess that most of us in leadership lean toward the spiritual movement side.

A helpful image for me about the church has been a train track.

‌

A train needs both tracks in order to run safely.

One track represents the spiritual movement and spontaneous side of the church.

The other track represents the planned structural and procedural side of the church.

We need spiritual awakening and we need business meetings.

With only business meetings, the church either dries up spiritually or warps to become something it was never mean to be, such as an insiders club, a family reunion or corporation.

With only spiritual awakenings, the church can digress into a mystery cult, a navel gazing group or end up in jail from mismanagement of finances.

I am convinced we need both. But I am convinced that we most often default to one or the other as we are personally wired.

Therefore we need to be intentional about growing in our ability/openness to whichever side does not fit our personality. And we need to surround ourselves with people who are built to travel on one track or the other.

Here are two resources which may help you with engaging one or the other:

We do not lack resources available for us to grow and learn. What we may lack is intentionality.

I pray for God's guidance for each of you as you seek to understand which track is your preferred track and which track is your "growing edge" track.

I want to say Thank You for your attention to the Annual Report that you just completed. The report came at an awkward time and dealt with reporting from months ago. And though it can feel like an intrusion upon your normal ministry, there are good reasons to have an Annual Report.

Thanks for your attentiveness in completing the report. And for those of you who are still in process, keep up the good work.

If requested, participants will receive credit for the Evangelism/Church Growth course

required for ordination.

This cohort will start September 30, 2021
