Planning ahead for Fireworks and Nickle Dickle Day
by Christine Fenner
President, Waconia Chamber of Commerce
What a year! As I write this May newsletter, I reflect back on one year ago (May 1st) since I started with the Chamber. It was a tough time to step in; and rather than plan and prepare for future events, we had to take a step back due to Covid-19.
This year feels different. The coordinating and preparations have started for the 4th of July, and also Nickle Dickle Day. We’re preparing and raising funds to support a fantastic show for this year’s 4th of July Fireworks Festival! Watch for more details in the coming weeks. Click here to read more...

Protecting employers' right to decide competitive benefits
by Doug Loon, Minnesota Chamber President
"As early as this week, the Minnesota Senate and House may vote on proposals such as mandating up to 24 weeks of paid leave – that's 44 percent of work days in a year. This mandate applies to all private-sector employers, regardless of size. If enacted, Minnesota would be the only state in the nation with such expansive and expensive mandates.
Businesses and local chambers from around the state are contacting their legislators to urge them to oppose labor mandates on private-sector employers. The House labor and workforce omnibus bill is full of provisions that hurt employers in a time of economic recovery. The Senate could vote on these proposals as amendments to the Senate Jobs bill." Legislature must act to provide tax forgiveness on PPP loans. Minnesota does NOT automatically conform to federal tax law changes so state legislation must be passed to ensure the forgivable loans are not taxed in Minnesota and the deductibility of those expenses is allowed.
