Fire Prevention Week: Stay Aware and Be Prepared!
October 5–11 marks Fire Prevention Week. This week, we'll walk you through evacuation procedures and share essential dos and don’ts to keep everyone safe and informed. Let’s work together to ensure a quick, calm, and coordinated response in case of emergency.
| |
If you hear a fire alarm:
-
Evacuate the building via the nearest exit and DO NOT use elevators.
-
Be aware of residents who may require assistance evacuating. Please notify a Residence Staff member or emergency personnel of their location.
-
Proceed to an assembly area across the street and away from the building.
- Keep access ways and roadways clear.
-
Await instructions from Campus Security.
-
When the 'All Clear' signal is given, re-enter the building through the main entrance.
| |
Do you have accessibility requirements?
If you have an accessibility requirement (e.g. difficulty waking or mobility impairment) that impacts your ability to evacuate immediately when an alarm sounds, please notify Residence Life and Services and your Don to arrange a safety evacuation plan.
| If you are on the ground floor: exit the building by normal means. | |
If you are above or below the ground floor:
-
Call the University Emergency Report Centre at 613-533-6111
-
Tell the dispatcher that your fire alarm is sounding, you need assistance to evacuate, and you cannot leave your floor area. If you smell smoke or are in immediate danger, inform the dispatcher.
- Provide your exact location – Building, Floor and Room Number.
- Provide the phone number you are calling from. You MUST be able to receive return calls at this number.
| Evacuation Dos and Don’ts | | |
Do:
- Keep fire doors closed
- Evacuate the building in a timely and orderly manner
| | |
Do NOT:
- Use elevators
- Go back inside until Campus Security gives the 'All-Clear' — even if the fire trucks have left!
| | Remember: failure to evacuate promptly and safely puts the lives of other residents, staff, and emergency services personnel at risk, and is considered a serious conduct violation. | | |
