Several of his students are recognized figures in the international classical guitar arena today. An Indian River County Treasure

Vero Beach and Indian River County lost a treasured, one-of-a-kind icon last week, Alma Lee Loy. With her actions, she inspired a community and more than one generation of leaders to carry on her legacy. It was an honor to know her. So many will miss you, Alma Lee.

Laura Riding Jackson Foundation Competitions
WHAT COVID 19 MEANS TO YOU…

This Covid 19 pandemic has been revelatory. Perhaps now more than ever, people appreciate one another and the value of community. As we all adapt to this tiny virus in big ways, Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation is creating space for community and healing.
To foster expression of the written word and to encourage creative self-expression, Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation is launching two contests: one, through our teachers, a Youth Writing Competition K-12, all-genre, teacher-curated drawing and; two, Indian River County Poetry Competition, juried by committee led by IRC Poet Laureate Sean Sexton.
The Youth Writing Competition, facilitated through teachers, will award three $25 gift cards to each elementary, middle and high school levels. Details will be provided to all school districts in our county as well as SES teachers. Students are encouraged to discuss with their teachers on how to enter submissions. More information is available on www.lrjf.org . Entries due June 1 and winners announced July 1, 2020.
The Indian River Poetry Competition will award one Grand Prize $500 with three runners up each $125 (must be 18 years or older) and due date for submissions is June 1, 2020. One submission per person allowed and poems are limited to 40 lines. Winner will be notified by July 1, 2020. Details and submission forms are available at www.lrjf.org .

A Message from incoming Executive Director Louise Kennedy

It has long been the mission of LRJF to bring people together through writing and honoring the past and inspiring the future through the written word for all ages in our community. That mission is more relevant today than ever before. As people long for connection and start to realize how much of their daily experience is created through community, LRJF wants to provide space for exactly that.

Writing is an important way for people to communicate emotion. It allows for empathy, compassion and growth. At times like this when myriad forms of grief sit at the surface, grief for loss of stability, relationships, touch and so much more, writing connects people. Our goal at LRJF is to facilitate that connection. Whether through our Teen and Adult Writers Workshops, our Poetry and Barbeque, our gallery-salons, our special collaborations with the Community Church or whether it is sharing the past of our community by inviting people into Laura’s historic home, LRJF brings people together.
During this unprecedented time in our community’s history, we hope to encourage “expression of the written word” to document our county’s pandemic experience.

Melbourne Jewelry Artist Peg Miller
Best in Show Lake Wales Arts Festival
From Lake Wales Arts Council:

Peggy Miller's Artist Statement

My approach to design remains simple by idea, keeping my work fresh and unique. I continue to use traditional hand tools; my favorite being a jeweler's saw.
I have been designing and creating individual pieces using silver and gold metals for over 40 years. All my work is hand-fabricated, and no casting methods are used.
My current techniques are weaving, creating hollow forms and bead design. No one ever said a bead has to be round. I continue to explore new techniques and share my vision with others.

JoAnn Falletta and SiriusXM Symphony Hall host, Preston Trombly, explore the world of Beethoven's Nine Symphonies together. Who or what is the reason that led you to become a career musician?
"It was a really natural progression for me. It started out as just fun. I remember being nudged to practice, but never pushed. For a long time, it was just something that came so naturally to me, and I seemed to be pretty good at it. Despite earning top prizes in competitions while in school, I never thrived on competing with others, but once I started playing in chamber orchestra around 13 or 14, I knew I’d found my place. I loved the teamwork that it required. Everyone was valuable as an individual, but you had to have a common goal in order for the product to be really great. It got even more exciting playing in big orchestras. Most people think they are settling for an orchestral job if their solo career doesn’t take off. For me, orchestra was always the goal. I love figuring out how best to serve the team."
From Ellen Gillette at Pineapple Playhouse:

Pineapple Playhouse will not be having Camp Bravo for children in June due to the uncertainty of the times. The annual awards banquet usually scheduled for June is also postponed. Having to cancel and reschedule the last two shows of our season has hit us hard financially. Any donations (tax deductible) are greatly appreciated as we work to promote live theater on the Treasure Coast as we have been pleased to do for 48 years. Box office hours are reduced because of the pandemic, but you may call 772-465-0366 or email  info@pineappleplayhouse.com . Thank you, and see you in September!
From José Leal, curator at Bailey-Mathews National Shell Museum:

The Coronavirus just erased all our best-laid plans . The Museum has no admission income and no store sales, but we still have 493 mouths to feed and 20 amazing employees to support.  If you are able, we sure could use your help.

We opened our new Aquarium exhibits on March 1 st . We had to close the Museum on March 16 th . This should have been our busiest time of year providing income for the slower months.  We know we’ll have a massive cash shortfall.

And yet,

  •  Our animals still need to be fed and cared for .
  •  We have the best group of employees  I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with in my 25+ years here at the Museum.  We need to keep them .
Presented by The National WWII Museum - New Orleans

Through iconic photographs, the exhibit illustrates the attack on Pearl Harbor and examines the moments that led the United States into World War II. It was a day of tragedy, sacrifice and heroism that united a nation;
it was a day that lives in Infamy.

Around the Internet:

As students across Houston hunker down in their homes to help stop the spread of coronavirus, teachers like cellist Lisa Vosdoganes are on the lookout for ways to keep kids connected. For Vosdoganes, the best way was a "quarantine flash mob" of students playing musical instruments in their yards.
At 10 a.m., students from HISD's Parker Elementary School emerged from their homes with violins, guitars, cellos and other instruments to join others from Vosdoganes' Suzuki strings magnet program at the school. The students and their families practiced proper social distancing while playing together, some from vehicles or apartment stairwells and others from street corners and driveways, creating a heartwarming tribute to community in a troubling time.

April 5, 1918. The first mention of a new influenza outbreak in Kansas appears in a public health report. Th at strain, later called the Spanish Flu, would go on to kill at least 50 million people worldwide. In a time before widespread global travel, how did this disease spread so far, so fast? And what does it teach us about fighting pandemics today?

Special thanks to Dr. Jeremy Brown, author of Influenza: The 100-Year Hunt to Cure the Deadliest Disease in History.

Resources . The Arts Endowment continues to add new information as it arises to the  COVID-19 Resources for Artists and Arts Organizations  page on our website. It includes links to organizations with frequently updated news and resources, as well as a contact list for state and regional arts agencies that may provide you with a more direct line of assistance in your community. As you may know, 40% of the Endowment’s funding each year is distributed directly to state and regional arts agencies; this will apply to relief funds, as well.

Sharing information . In addition to the information on our website and in this newsletter, you might consider staying connected to a literary arts service organization or group that can represent you and your concerns and can provide helpful information back to you that they are hearing from the field. Some of the groups with whom we are communicating include:  LitNet , the  Community of Literary Magazines and Presses Poets & Writers the Academy of American Poets  and  the Poetry Coalition The Authors Guild , and  the Association of Writers & Writing Programs .

The  Anonymous Was a Woman  awards have supported women artists over 40 since 1996, distributing more than $6 million in grants to a population that has historically and systematically been overlooked when it comes to major accolades and support. Now, for the first time ever, the organization is doubling its annual offering with an additional $250,000 of emergency relief grants in response to the ongoing health crisis that has shuttered museums, galleries, and other businesses around the world.
