I am playing a waiting game. The image above shows the whirling post tropical cyclone from hurricane Idalia. It is swirling away, offshore of Nova Scotia. Deeper reds signify heavier winds. It is easy to see that much of the eastern half of Nova Scotia, where I am, is being buffeted by the strongest winds. This morning the forecast was upped to 35 to 45 knots from the northeast. The low pressure system is not moving away quickly and resembles the structure of a classic cyclone. I have to wait for the storm to weaken before proceeding; it is supposed to begin a weakening by tomorrow.
My brother, Bob, was going to fly to Halifax and meet me there to sail home. Instead, when his plane lands in Halifax a few minutes from now, he is hiring a car to drive him to the Liscombe Lodge where Tazzarin is now docked, about a two hour drive. He should be here sometime before midnight.
Tomorrow morning we will reassess the weather and make a plan to proceed. Meanwhile, my food stores aboard are drawing a bit low. There is no grocery or convenience store within 20 miles of the boat right now. So, we will both reprovision and refuel in Halifax in a couple days.
Chances are a heavy sea will be running even after the wind dies. Right now seas are ten to thirteen feet offshore. When Bob arrives we will sleep and then play this waiting game together; hopefully we will be on our way before long.
