CAMPBELL RIVER: Bob Bray points out three events that could have changed the vote of a citizen who voted early instead of waiting for Election Day.

Waiting for September 20th Election Day in Canada
Voting opportunities were not so long ago available only on a single day. This petition calls for a return to one day voting. I am using today's Election Day to compare the ideal way to gauge the will of the electorate to our current practice.
Ideal way:
Most votes (95%) are cast in person on a single day at the end of several weeks of political campaigns, giving every voter equal exposure to the latest information before voting, and producing a final result that is confidently understandable in its transparent simplicity so that it is wholeheartedly accepted by all citizens.

Current practice:
  • Add the in-person votes cast on 5 separate days into the in-person total.
  • Announce the in-person total at the end of Election Day.
  • Add the vote-by-mail votes after Election Day into the vote-by-mail total.
  • Combine the in-person total with the vote-by-mail total
  • Announce the final result as soon after Election Day as possible
  • Be satisfied with achieving a final result open to some skepticism due to the complexity that also potentially clouds its acceptance by the citizenry.
Some events occurring just before Election Day caused voters to change their mind.

For example, opinion poll support for the People's Party surged in response to the imposition of digital identity cards.

Other events had the potential causing a voter to change his or her mind.

The launch of the Indian in Cabinet book brought a reminder of the ethical issues that may have been downplayed otherwise.

The exclusion of Canada from the new security pact between Australia, United Kingdom and United States may have caused a liberal or a socialist to feel duped resulting in her or his fresh consideration for a conservative party that is strong on national defence.

Several developments along the 36-day campaign trail:
Day 25
Sep 9
Leaders televised debate - English
Day 27
Sep 11

  • 50K out of Canada vote-by-mail
  • 11.3M in person votes
  • 18.4M total 2019 votes
  • less 7.1M early 2021 votes
Some quotes from the September 18 issue of the Vancouver Sun

Lori Culbert quotes Stuart Prest, an SFU political scientist:
"...And some Canadians are just now starting to tune in now that we're back into the fall groove."

Vaughn Palmer writes, "The premier (John Horgan) said he personally voted in the advance poll for Alistair MacGregor, the NDP incumbent in the federal riding that overlaps Horgan's provincial constituency."

Lori Culbert quotes Sanjay Serum, an SFU political scientist:
"I wonder, when it comes down to it, if after the debates they're starting to look more at the synopsis of the platforms, maybe they're sort of rethinking their votes."
One quote from the September 18 issue of the National Post:

Brian Platt and Anja Karadeglija quote Eric Grenier who runs CBC's Poll Tracker and analyzes polling for his own website The Writ:
"Strategic voting is a thing that you decide on at the very last moment rather than a week ahead of time because you might be waiting to see how things unfold."
One Day Voting Initiative Petition - IP-2021-001
The name of this legislative petition is: Initiative to change the voting opportunities in provincial elections.

The petition is described on the Current Initiative Petitions page of the Elections BC website along with the Public Notice which can be seen here.

As I write there are 4 canvassers registered by Elections BC for signature gathering from folks who prefer strengthening their community by having almost everyone vote on a single day at an in-person event in their neighbourhood over those who feel the easiness of vote-by-mail and the convenient options of early voting are totally without nefarious consequences.

On the Social Mavrik list the ridings of the 4 canvassers are shown.

The petition is described on the Current Initiative Petitions page of the Elections BC website.

At the time of writing 328 canvassers are registered for signature gathering from folks who prefer national policing over local policing.
