Welcome Friends of Wake Health

Welcome to our new eNewsletter from Wake Health Services.  We are looking forward to connecting with you and sharing what a Community Health Center is and how we impact the communites we serve in both Wake and Franklin counties. Six primary care medical practices, 25,000 patients, healthcare partners that make it all possible...we have some great stories to share!

Expanded Services in 2014

Wake Health Services is one of several local agencies selected to receive funding over the next five years from the Wake County's Community Capital Project Fund. Wake Health Services will receive $450,000 to help expand the Rock Quarry Road Family Medicine facility to increase primary healthcare for low-income residents. The expanded facility will nearly double in size and enable us to serve an additional 8-10,000 patients in need of a medical home. Our New Bern Ridge Pediatrics and Dental Center will relocate to this expanded medical campus. We expect to break ground to begin the project in late 2014.

Other initiatves in 2014 include a partnership with Walgreens through the 340B Phamacy Program; the expansion of our Horizon Healthcare for the Homeless program; and the expansion of Integrative Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

We will be reaching out to strengthen community partnerships and build new ones as we work to let the community know about the services we provide. If you would like someone from Wake Health Services to make a presentation to your organization, let us know! kcook@whsi.org.

ACA Outreach & Enrollment Activities

Community Health Centers like Wake Health Services are a vital resource for outreach and enrollment in the Affordable Care Act.

According to Emily Mallasch, Outreach and Enrollment Administrator, staff are trained and working with consumers daily to accomplish the goal of expanding access to the Federal Insurance Marketplace. Staff are assisting patients and consumers six days a week, answering questions and providing one-on-one erollment assistance in both Wake and Franklin counties. Wake Health has four staff dedicated 100% to Outreach & Enrollment efforts and in addition has 31 staff members trained and certified across all of our primary care sites.

Diabetes Provider of the Year Award

Wake Health Services received the Blue Cross Blue Shield Provider of the Year Award, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association of Eastern North Carolina. It is awarded to programs that exceed the national standards for providing patient care for individuals with diabetes.

Registered Dietitians Doris Nicholas Mir, MPH, RD, LDN, CDE and Brooke Findley, MS, RD, LDN accepted the award at a November Gala event. "I feel that we are providing a much needed service, and that our patients are fortunate to have a qualified team of providers to help tham manage their diabetes," said Nicholas-Mir.

Apex Couple Chooses Carefully

Rex and Bonnie Alexander (pictured on bench above) moved to Apex two years ago and everything was going great. They were visiting churches, making new friends--except they could not find a primary care doctor. It took Rex three months to finally find a practice that was accepting new patients and would take his insurance. "I called everyone in the phonebook," said Rex. "When I called Apex Family Medicine, I was welcomed."

In fact, Rex was so appreciative of the care he received, he became a donor. He did some research, and learned that Apex Family Medicine is a Community Health Center with a lot of patients in need. He said he has supported many organizations over the years, but never before has he felt so appreciated by an organization. "You're touching lives of many people who cannot afford healthcare. We choose carefully how we donate," stated Rex.

Practice Administrator Christopher McDougal said, "The opportunity to talk to patients like this and explain what community health is all about, and to know that they appreciate what we do is one of the most rewarding things about working here."

"This is the best kind of gift, because we earned it," said CEO Penny Washington. "This is a great example of putting the patient first."
