From Jason Hill, Community Lay Director

Hello Community!

As I step into the role of Lay Director for the Chattanooga–LaFayette Emmaus Community, I do so with deep gratitude — for those who have gone before me, for the many hands and hearts that have built this community, and for the countless moments when God has met pilgrims in ways only He can. I feel less like I’m taking the helm of a ship and more like I’m joining a long procession already moving in the right direction.

This season, the word God keeps placing on my heart is Unity.

My prayer card has carried these words with me for a few months, but lately they feel newly alive:

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
— Galatians 3:26–28

Paul isn’t offering a poetic metaphor here. He’s describing a spiritual reality that is already true — and yet one we are continually invited to practice. We live in a world trained to divide: by background, personality, politics, preferences, worship styles, even by how long we’ve been in the community. But in Christ, all of that takes a back seat to something deeper. We are clothed in the same grace. We kneel at the same table. We walk under the same cross.

And the tool God keeps highlighting for living this unity is simple, though never easy: Agape Love.

Agape is not sentimental. It is active. It chooses patience over reaction, curiosity over judgment, presence over distance. It is the love that steps toward one another even when we don’t fully understand each other. It is the love that creates space, listens longer than feels comfortable, and believes that the Spirit is at work in people whose stories we do not yet know.

As we move into this new season together, my hope is that we will lean into this calling — not as a theme for a year, but as a way of being. In gatherings, in board meetings, in team selection, in conversations in the parking lot after Closing — may we ask not, “How do I protect my corner?” but “How do I clothe myself with Christ in this moment?”

I am grateful for the past — for the leaders, servants, musicians, cooks, prayer warriors, and table leaders who have faithfully carried this community to where it is today. And I am genuinely excited for what’s ahead. Not because everything will be easy, but because God is faithful, and because we are not walking into the future alone.

Thank you for welcoming me into this role. I look forward to walking this road with you — one in Christ, held together by agape love.

With gratitude. DeColores,

Jason

A Word about Sponsorship!

Prospective Pilgrims

Here are some things to consider when you have a desire to sponsor a pilgrim.

  1. Pray, asking God to bring people to mind that would benefit from a walk.
  2. Is the person already on a pilgrimage with God, willing to grow and move forward in their journey of faith?
  3. They should already have a Christian orientation and fervor. They need to already know that God can make a difference in their lives.
  4. It’s important that they are not so consumed by other situations that they will not be able to give full attention on the weekend and in the follow-up activities.

Spend time in prayer before talking with the potential pilgrim. Don’t be discouraged if the person is hesitant. Be willing to admit it may not be the right time.

  • $150

  • What if I can’t pay all $150?
  • We have full and partial scholorships available – just ask!

  • What if I can’t fulfill all the duties? (Bring to sendoff- stay for sponsor’s hour- Candlelight- Closing- Follow up)
