Construction Updates
Milwaukee Avenue Streetscape
Work is slated to begin the week of August 8th at the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Howard Street as part of the Milwaukee Avenue Streetscape Improvements project. As part of the work, there will be daily lane closures near the Milwaukee and Howard intersection. Traffic patterns are expected to shift often during the duration of the project. The expected period of the daily lane closures is two months. Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra time and use caution in this area and/or seek alternate routes.
IDOT Construction Resuming
Following the end of a quarry workers strike that has affected construction throughout the northern Illinois region, several IDOT projects in the Niles area are resuming. Please plan ahead and use caution when driving through work zones.

  • Oakton Street from Busse Highway to Waukegan Road - Construction is tentatively set to resume this week or next (the week of August 1st or August 8th). Work will continue on curb and gutter and sidewalk removal. Structure adjustments are also scheduled to begin in early August.
  • Oakton Street from Waukegan Road to Long Avenue - Construction is tentatively set to begin the week of August 22nd. Temporary information signs will go up the week before to alert the traveling public.
  • Waukegan Road from Milwaukee Avenue to Oakton Street - Construction is tentatively set to begin late in the week of August 8th. Construction will start with curb and gutter and sidewalk work. Hot-mix asphalt work will most likely not begin until approximately the second half of September.
  • Harlem Avenue from Oakton Street to Dempster Street - Construction resumed the week of July 25th. Hot-mix asphalt paving has been completed, and pavement markings have been placed.
