Department Spotlight

Religious Studies Department

This month the SSC is proud to highlight the Religious Studies Department within the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences. Read on to learn more about this exciting program.

The religious studies program is committed to exploring our similarities and embracing differences. This is done by examining how humans all over the world think about questions of life and death; engage in processes of making meaning, manifesting joy and of grieving; and create and respond to cultures and institutions of power.

A RELS major can easily be paired with another major or minor so that students can blend their RELS coursework with other fields of study.

Career opportunities for graduates are vast and varied. Alumni have pursued careers in law, medicine, the nonprofit sector and education - careers in which critical thinking, problem-solving and writing skills are important. No matter the chosen career, the RELS major sets our alumni apart by preparing them to honor difference, embrace complexity and lead with integrity

Religious Studies is proud to offer both RELS 2703 Pilgrims and Pilgrimage and RELS/WGS/LGBT 3823 Queer Religion this fall. Additional course offerings include: Intro to Islam, Religion and Black Pop Music, Buddhist Traditions, Daoist Traditions, Biblical Literature, Jesus Interpreted, and Roman Religion.

RELS is proud to have a reputation of putting students first. We do this by offering smaller class sizes to ensure individualized attention, awarding eight endowed scholarships yearly, hosting a monthly student lunch and regular special events geared toward student interests and success.
