Associate Pastor
     Central Presbyterian Church

How does the body of Christ engage faithfully in being agents of reconciliation in divided times?  As minority communities face the daily stranglehold of racial profiling, and police officers face relentless scrutiny by an anxious public, tensions mount as lines are being drawn in the sand. This conflict can only be broken by finding common ground with each other.

As the Presbytery of Baltimore continues to wrestle with race, class, and poverty, Central Presbyterian Church will host a screening and discussion of a recent Baltimore-centered documentary called "Walking While Black: L.O.V.E is the Answer" f rom 7:00pm to 9:30pm on Monday, Mar. 20. The viewing will be hosted by me, TE Andy Nagel of Central, and Pastor Antoine Payne of Grace Beyond the Walls Church in Collington Square in East Baltimore.

Featuring powerful testimony from both community members and police -- including the Baltimore Police Department's Lt. Colonel Melvin T. Russell, Chief of the Community Partnership Division, Baltimore Police Department -- this film not only seeks to clearly identify the issues that contribute to current tensions, but also invites us to make personal commitments to be part of the solution.  Stories of structural challenges and injustice are juxtaposed with powerful instances of personal reconciliation.According to the film's director, A.J. Ali, L.O.V.E. is an acronym for a proven set of action steps:
L earn about the community you serve;
O pen your heart to the people in it
V olunteer yourself to be part of the solution, and;
E mpower others to do the same
Promoters of "Walking While Black, L.O.V.E. is the Answer," hope that public screenings of the film will broker discussion that can aid in repairing relationships between police officers and the community; assure that the 14th Amendment's promise of equal protection under the law for all; and, increase the safety and protection of those who bravely protect and serve our citizens.
This conflict within our communities can only be broken by finding common ground with each other.
