Supporting families in challenging times: parish is ‘Walking with Moms in Need’

Southern Nebraska Register

December 5, 2025

"St. John the Apostle Parish in Lincoln held a “Walking with Moms in Need” collection in November to benefit St. Gianna’s Women’s Homes.

The St. Gianna program of Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska offers moms and their children a safe and stable living environment. When mothers then transition to their own homes, they can take the kitchen items they’ve been utilizing at St. Gianna, meaning new supplies are necessary to restock the shelves for future residents.

St. John’s parishioners donated more than $3,200 in cash donations, and filled nearly three truckloads of kitchen items to benefit the 22 women currently supported by St. Gianna’s."

"Walking with Moms in Need, a pregnancy resource center associated with St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, hosted its first community baby shower on Nov. 15.

The event, held at Mary’s Manger on St. Paul the Apostle’s Ministry Center campus in Chino, was attended by 85 guests to honor 16 mothers who are expecting a child or have infants, along with their partners and guests.

Walking with Moms in Need, with the help of generous donors, supplied mothers with diapers, formula, blankets, baby equipment, clothing, gift cards, and more.

'Our mission is to ensure every mother feels seen and supported, regardless of her circumstances,' Kelly Schlegel, founder of Walking with Moms said.

'Serving 16 families today and seeing the community turnout highlights the powerful impact of coming together.' The next baby shower will be held in spring 2026.

The resource center opened in July in the same building that once housed unwed mothers at the former Hillview Acres in 2005.

Hillview Acres, a home for abused and neglected youth, was purchased by St. Paul the Apostle in 2011 to house religious education, preschool, and a retreat center."

Prayer Intention

May each expectant mother making an adoption plan receive the support and care of the Christian community as she makes a loving choice for her child.
