New ministry provides baby items for moms in need

"A local church is hosting a monthly store to help meet the needs of pregnant or new mothers.

Christ the King, at 714 Stone St., Kings Mountain, has started a new ministry called Walking with Moms in Need, and will be opening Saturday, May 24, from noon to 1 p.m.

The store will be giving away diapers, clothes, car seats, cribs and other baby items.

'Our ministry supports pregnant and parenting moms by providing free baby supplies,' said Sabrina Buchanan, ministry leader of Christ the King Mission Church.

She said the program is a parish-based initiative to increase support for pregnant and parenting mothers and was implemented in Charlotte at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. She said her pastor at Christ the King is involved in that ministry and decided to assist mothers locally with a local program.

'This is our first store,' Buchanan said. 'We wanted to have one here closer to Cleveland County and Gaston County area.'

She said the store at St. Matthews serves about 120 people a month and is held the first Saturday of each month.

'A lot of places that help, you have to sign up, and they have requirements you have to meet and a lot of red tape,' Buchanan said.

Some local agencies require attending Bible studies in order to receive help.

Buchanan said they just want to serve mothers with no-strings-attached.

'No questions asked,' she said. 'It's honesty-based.'

She said they offer the women prayers and further assistance if requested.

The church plans to host the store monthly on the third Saturday of each month.

"We want to keep collecting on a regular basis,' she said. 'I want to get the word out. I've got lots of donations.'

Buchanan said they accept donations of baby clothes, baby items, car seats strollers and unopened, unexpired baby formula.

'My hope is that the work we do really helps to alleviate some of the burdens mothers carry to provide for their children,' she said. 'Most importantly, I want the mothers in our community all over the world to know they are thought of and are constantly prayed for. I want them to know they don't have to do it all alone. We do what we do because we love to serve, so please let us walk with you.'"

Mother’s Day celebrates all moms, including those in need

"VENICE |  The month of May in the Church is dedicated to the Blessed Mother, the earthly mother of Jesus, the Son of God. In May we also celebrate Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, 2025, honoring all moms, including those in need, or experiencing an unexpected or difficult pregnancy.

The news of an unexpected pregnancy can come as a shock and bring overwhelming feelings of fear, shame, anxiety, and doubt. Without a strong support system, what should be joyful news, can instead be experienced as a crisis. Often, a woman facing an unexpected pregnancy may not know where she can turn for help and assistance.

Walking with Moms in Need is a nationwide program established in 2020 by the U.S. Bishops and operates at the Parish level to accompany pregnant and parenting mothers in need.

The Diocese of Venice is an active participant in this outreach which works to ensure that any woman who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant, or parenting in difficult circumstances, can turn to her local Catholic Church and be connected with the resources she needs. ...For resources in English and Spanish on how you can Walk with a Mom in Need, visit https://dioceseofvenice.org/offices/offices-departments/respect-life/walking-with-moms-in-need/.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops also offers a guide to help the faithful learn how to support a friend experiencing an unexpected pregnancy, called “10 Ways to Support Her When She is Unexpectedly Expecting,” and can be found at respectlife.org/support-her.

Each tip offers practical advice because for women, an unexpected pregnancy can be a difficult and frightening time, and it’s important that she knows she has support...

“'I have never felt so loved and welcomed by a church before.'

These are words shared by a young woman participating in the 'Embrace Grace' support group for single pregnant women at Holy Trinity Church in Lenexa. This is also what happens when a parish community, and specifically group leaders, share the love of Jesus Christ through authentic friendship, kindness and support as part of our 'Walking with Moms in Need' ministry efforts.

Holy Trinity is one of four parishes to start this new support group and the fruits already coming from it are truly amazing. At a time when women facing an unexpected or challenging pregnancy may feel overwhelming fear, isolation and uncertainty, the support group helps them know they are not alone, they have support, and that they are loved by a Father who wants to give them peace and goodness during this moment of trial.

This is exactly what the four moms-to-be experienced during Holy Trinity’s first 12-week 'Embrace Grace' program that recently concluded. Terry Geenens, one of the group leaders, shared, 'We had an amazing baby shower on Saturday! Deacon Stuart Holland gave a heartwarming blessing to the girls and their families. We had 30-40 people attend and parish and community members donated gifts. It was a beautiful picture of what it looks like to have an entire community surround these brave women in support. The moms truly felt loved by so many people.'

There were many Holy Spirit moments during the session. One mom went to Mass for the first time in a long time and felt an overwhelming sense of peace. One couple got married. Another’s family, though not Catholic, were inspired by the beauty of the church itself and generosity of the community. The moms enjoyed the friendships and program so much, they don’t want it to end. The leaders are now working on what to do next to encourage these new families to continue growing in their faith.

The Church of the Ascension in Overland Park also recently finished its first support group. Four healthy babies have been born with one mom making a loving adoption plan for her baby. Sue Leick, one of its group leaders, said, 'This is the best thing any of us have done. We’ve fallen in love with these strong, brave women. The best way to love these babies is to love their moms.'..."
