As reports surfaced last week of a 60% abortion drop in the state of Texas with the Texas Heartbeat Act now in-effect, the urgency for Catholics to care for mothers who are choosing life has grown exponentially...

As so many states are moving to advance pro-life legislation and others attempting to codify Roe v. Wade into state law with the pending Dobbs decision, it’s a critical time for the pro-life community including the important work of Walking With Moms in Need

Kat Talalas, assistant director for pro-life communications for the USCCB’s Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, spoke to the Register about this new pro-life ministry. She pointed out that it's a pivotal moment for this pastoral initiative...

“No matter what any court or legislature decides, we must do all we can to create a culture that respects women and every unborn human life. We do this by strengthening marriage and family life and also in seeking to serve and understand women who may be vulnerable to abortion. Through the expansive social ministries of the Church, we do a lot to help mothers in need, but there are tremendous opportunities on the local and parish level to reach out to women who are pregnant and to provide them with the support to choose life.”

Falmouth parish ‘Walking with Moms in Need’,

other Maine parishes encouraged to join the effort

BDN Community, Bangor Daily News

February 14, 2022

FALMOUTH — Successfully launched in October as “Be Courageous,” an unplanned pregnancy support group at Holy Martyrs Church in Falmouth is expanding with hopes of reaching even more people in need.

“We have many new volunteers who are helping with the expansion of a robust email distribution list to OB-GYN clinics, women’s health centers, community health centers, high schools, colleges, and other denominations,” said Kim Palli of the Parish of the Holy Eucharist, of which Holy Martyrs Church is a part. “There is a lot of new energy.”

And a new name. The group is now titled “Walking with Moms in Need,” a nationwide initiative that increases support for pregnant and parenting mothers facing difficulties...

“It was immediately successful. We had a young, single mom and a young pregnant mom reach out for guidance,” said Palli. “We have discovered there are so many varied needs and questions and have expanded our ‘toolbox’ and coaches in multiple areas such as career counseling, parenting classes, social workers, and lawyers.”

The group is guided by a simple Pope Francis quote, that parishes need to be “islands of mercy in the midst of a sea of indifference.”

Celebrating the Anniversary of The Gospel of Life

Pope St. John Paul II issued his encyclical, Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life), on March 25, 1995. This important document on the value and dignity of every human life helped inspire Walking with Moms in Need.
