December 2020
Greetings RSPA-Wallisville Family

Welcome to December! It is my hope that each of you had a great Thanksgiving filled with lots of love and blessings with your families. As we move into the closing out of the semester, we want to assure you that your scholars will be engaged and participating in instructional activities throughout the next three weeks.

November was a quick and busy month for the staff and students at RSPA-Wallisville. Everyone was hard at work as we came to the end of the first nine weeks. I hope that you have had the opportunity to meet or talk with your scholar’s teachers and have a good idea of how your scholar is doing with their academic and behavioral progress. Report cards were distributed on Wednesday, November 4th. SLED conferences were held October 30th, though this was the only formal date for conferences during the first semester, you are strongly encouraged to maintain frequent contact with your child’s teachers throughout the year and you can always arrange for an individual conference if you or the teacher feels the need to meet.

As we move into the cold weather season, if your scholar is an on-ground learner, please be sure that your child comes to school prepared to go outside for recess and other outdoor activities. Scholars WILL be going outside as often as possible. Additionally, with cooler weather comes the possibility of getting a cold or other respiratory illnesses. We want to assure you that we are maintaining all CDC Guidelines and RSPA COVID Response Protocols, by completing daily Wellness Checks, providing daily masks to scholars and staff members, have hand sanitizer stations across the campus and in each classroom, and perform frequent cleaning of all high traffic areas. Please be sure to remind your little ones to practice careful hand washing and to not share personal items. We want to try hard to keep the possible spread of illness to a minimum. If your child is sick, please let the campus and their teachers know and have them stay home until they are symptom free for 24 hours. They will still be able to complete daily assignments virtually while off campus.

During the week of December 7-11, we will be completing our second round of Curriculum-based Assessments (CBAs). Throughout this week scholars will be assessed on their content knowledge in Reading (K-5), Writing (4), Math (K-5), and Science (5) [schedule to come]. It is extremely important that your scholars not only do their very best during these tests, but perform at their highest level all school year. One way to ensure your scholar is best prepared for academic success is to attend school regularly. Your scholar must participate in instructional activities daily and turn in completed assignments on time. If your scholar is a virtual learner, it is vital that they log into their daily Zoom sessions to access the day’s material. Additionally, it is important that they are not simply in attendance, but are actively participating and engaging in the learning process. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact your scholar’s teachers or me personally to discuss.

On December 10th we will be having our Fall Picture Day! Throughout the morning we will be allowing our on-ground scholars to take pictures from 8:00am-10:00am. We will have our normal lunch and recess schedule from 10:00am-12:00pm. Then open our campus for virtual scholars that want to come to campus to have their pictures taken from 12:00pm-1:00pm. If you are a virtual family and would like to schedule to have your scholar’s picture taken, please complete this form, so that we can ensure our safety procedures are being followed with additional people on campus. https://forms.gle/NnEoivZoUuU2C1iq6

Throughout the month of December we are continuing our campus focus of developing a love for reading and writing within our scholars. In an effort to increase scholar and family engagement with this focus, we have created a Reading Initiative of setting reading goals each month. In addition to creating reading goals we have implemented the Book It Program through Pizza Hut to reward scholars along their journey of reaching their reading goals. Teachers were able to send home updated Parent Approval Letters and a December Goal Tracking Calendar before the Thanksgiving Break. This month we are continuing the goal of reading at least 20 minutes a day. If you have not yet been able to approve your scholar’s participation in this amazing program, please let your student’s homeroom teacher know that you need an updated Parent Letter.

Last, but certainly not least, we want to give some HUGE shout outs to a few special people that have really displayed what it means to be an RSPA CREW member.
