Wallkill joins fight to fill food pantries | |
|
The Ulster County Food Fight is set to begin Thursday, Sept. 1! The food collection contest runs from Sept. 1 until Saturday, Oct. 15, with a goal of stocking food pantries across the county.
Fourteen Ulster County libraries are participating, including Wallkill, which means you can donate non-perishable items like canned goods to the library, and we'll deliver them to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in the hamlet. The library that collects the most items for donation wins the Food Fight and receives a certificate. Last year, libraries were able to collect 4,678 items. This year our goal is 6,000, but we need your help! Search your shelves, toss the expired stuff, and donate what you can to this excellent cause!

Great Give Back focuses on recycling | | |

Each year, The Great Give Back gives library users opportunities to participate in service-oriented and meaningful programs, workshops, and events. This year, Wallkill’s event will center around recycling.
The library is partnering with the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency to present a primer on all things involving recycling, with a goal of improving the recycling process to better help the environment. Putting unaccepted items in a recycling bin can damage equipment, harm workers, and create inefficiencies in the recycling process. The workshop will answer such questions as:
- Why can’t all plastics be recycled?
- What does the chasing arrows symbol mean?
- Are pizza boxes and coffee cups recyclable?
- How does recycling work in Ulster County?
- What is “wishcycling” and how does contamination affect recycling?
The library will also be putting out a collection box for old batteries, so you’ll know where to go when it’s time to recycle those!
Register soon for Recycle Right, which takes place at 6 p.m. Oct. 12.

Library’s digital navigator
can guide you through online services

Applying for housing, bill paying, grocery shopping, accessing lab and medical results, parent/teacher communications...all of these activities often take place online. As a result, people without Internet access can be at a disadvantage in managing many everyday tasks. A new initiative at the Wallkill Public Library aims to help close this divide.
The library is participating in Digital Navigators of the Hudson Valley, a program that seeks to provide free technology assistance to residents of the region. Adult programmer and circulation assistant Kim O’Sullivan received training to become a navigator.
Digital navigators assist anyone in need with using a device, securing free or low-cost Internet service, and much more. The program is administered by the Southeastern New York Library Resources Council (Southeastern) and supported with federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds allocated to the New York State Library by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Navigators can help connect people to low-cost Internet service and learn to use a device. They can also assist with a variety of key tasks, including:
- Finding ways to purchase low-cost phones or computers
- Finding resources for housing and submit online applications
- Managing healthcare, including: telehealth visits, patient portals, and other information
- Locating food resources
- Making a resume and filling out online job applications
- Making video calls to family and friends
- Connecting with public information like local government meetings
- Applying for services and benefits such as SNAP, Medicaid, and more
- Accessing educational services, such as remote learning opportunities or connecting to a child’s school portal
- Dealing with daily life tasks such as online grocery shopping or paying bills

Weekend of Wallkill coming soon! | |

This year’s Weekend of Wallkill kicks off the evening of Friday, Sept. 23, and continues with a Harvest Fair the next day!
Annual events such as the Art Show and Touch-a-Truck attraction will take place, in addition to new programs and activities such as yoga, Team Trivia, Science Corner, a Pickleball Demonstration, and more!
Contests include Remote Control Car Races, Apple Pie Baking, and the new 30-Day Step Challenge!
The Lion’s Club will host a Prime Rib Dinner at Popp Memorial Park, as well!

Weekend of Wallkill Quilt Display | |

Be sure to visit the Quilt Display during the Weekend of Wallkill festivities on Saturday, September 24. The Wallkill Quilters Annual Quilt Display will be in the Wallkill Reformed Church sanctuary. There will be door prizes and a gift for any child participating in the Scavenger Hunt. The Quilters will be there to answer any of your questions.
In addition to the beautiful display of the members’ quilts, there will be a small display of the quilts the group made for Project Linus. Project Linus provides handmade quilts and blankets to children in hospitals. Another display will be a quilt showing Operation Christmas Child, a program that provides Christmas gifts to needy children around the world. There will be information showing how the public can get involved in Operation Christmas Child.
The Wallkill Quilters group meets on Tuesdays at the Town Hall Community Room from 10 AM – 2 PM and is sponsored by the Wallkill Public Library.

There's still time to read a book or magazine or listen to an audiobook and participate in our adult summer reading program. For each item read, you earn a chance to win one of our amazing adult prizes. Entering is fast and easy! And, the more books you read or listen to, the higher your chances are to win.

On Wednesday, August 3rd, we celebrated our final Oceans of Possibility Summer Reading Program special event, as Mad Science (not literally) blew us away with an interactive and entertaining show about air pressure. On the Saturday before our finale, Miss Sarah from the Hudson River Maritime Museum shared lighthouse folklore with us...some of us then became lighthouses ourselves, while others became rocks and boats, creating a fun ocean maze for all! - THANK YOU! | |
The evening before our finale, Miss Kim and Miss Michelle represented our library at the Night Out at Wallkill. We shared information about library programs, passed out take-and-make crafts, and gifted amazing sea creature figurine sets to the children of our community, due to a generous donation from the Shawangunk Police Department - THANK YOU! | |

The day after our finale, Miss Michelle had the opportunity to visit Verkeerderkill Park to deliver 100 take-and-make crafts, plus some fun library swag, to children attending the Town of Shawangunk Kids Summer Camp. As our summer programs wound down, our reading challenges persevered! During this past week, children started handing in their Connect More reading charts… for prizes! We will continue collecting charts and then will do random drawings on August 31st for winners of some $25 Amazon gift cards - the more rows of 4 completed on a chart, the more chances there are to win!

Usborne’s “Reach for the Stars” reading challenge was a great success! Participants worked hard to earn books for themselves, as well as books for our library - some of which will be featured in this newsletter!

Family Storytime has returned to its usual slots on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 AM and Little Explorers STEM & Sensory is back on at 11:00 AM on Wednesdays.

Masks are optional for the most part, during both visits and programming, however, there may be some programs that require masking. If masks are required for a particular program, it will be indicated at the bottom of the program summary when you register for that event via the online activities calendar. If you’re ever in doubt, feel free to call the circulation desk and ask! And if YOU feel more comfortable wearing a mask to the library, don’t hesitate to do so. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Our doors are open for library services including browsing for library materials, making copies, sending faxes, and using the public access computers.

Our bookdrop is open for contact-free and after-hours returns of library materials. Be sure to secure DVD and BCD cases with rubber bands.

Curbside delivery of pre-ordered items is available by request. Call the circulation desk at 845-895-3707 to make a pick-up appointment.

Fine-free returns on everything, except museum/park passes.
