WALLKILL PUBLIC LIBRARY

Wallkill wins Food Fight!

Thanks to the generosity of our patrons and the hard work of programmer Kim O’Sullivan, Wallkill Public Library won this year’s Ulster County Food Fight!

Fifteen libraries throughout Ulster County received a total of 4,457 donations for their local food pantries, but Wallkill took in the most, with a whopping 824! This speaks volumes to the kindness of our users, and we’re grateful!

The Ulster County Food Fight was a food collection contest done by county libraries as part of the Great Give Back, an annual initiative that seeks to inspire community service. Thanks to all who donated!

Warming the Hudson Valley one coat at a time

The Southern Ulster Rotary Club is doing their annual coat drive, now through Nov. 5, and the library is a collection site! All are invited to drop off gently used, clean coats in all sizes, children through adults. There’s a collection box by the window across from the circulation desk.

Thank you for your support!

Trunk or Treat happening at Wallkill Reformed Church

Pumpkin Smash to close out Halloween season

You don’t have to watch your pumpkin slowly rot away on the porch steps this year – you can squash your squash at Vision of Wallkill’s inaugural Pumpkin Smash!

All town residents are invited to bring their pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns to the Town of Shawangunk Transfer Station at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6. Hit the bullseye with your pumpkins and win a gift card for a free ice cream cone at Stewarts!

Attendees will also tour the station, which is located at 267 River Road, and learn more about recycling, composting, and how to help keep Wallkill clean.

Old pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns will be accepted at the transfer station throughout the remainder of October and throughout November.

Great Give Back focuses on recycling

Each year, The Great Give Back gives library users opportunities to participate in service-oriented and meaningful programs, workshops, and events. This year, Wallkill will focus on recycling.

When you visit, drop off those old, dead batteries cluttering up your junk drawer. The library has a collection box to recycle old batteries. We will be collection through Sept. 2023.

Book Club makes November selection

The library’s Adult Fiction Club will meet again Nov. 17 to discuss Sophie Go’s Lonely Hearts Club, by Roselle Lim.

The book is about a matchmaker who attempts to find love for seven septuagenarian bachelors from her condo complex.

The Fiction Club meets at 6:30 p.m. New members are always welcome!

Trick or Treat bags

We decorated Trick or Treat canvas bags in preparation for Halloween (Thank you to the UCRRA for the bag donations!) Most designs were using Halloween chunky stamps, but some were drawn freehand. All the designs turned out great!

Haunted Halloween frames

Working on Halloween frames by weaving a yarn web, shading paper for the background and placing the creepy crawlies before distressing the frames.

Register early to get into “Make-it-at-the-library” programs

We realized that as of this publication date, most of Christine’s maker workshops in November are already FULL!  We remind patrons that if they want to get into programs, they need to register early on our website! Although we may not offer paper programming calendars weeks in advance, you can scroll forward on our online calendar to view upcoming programs and register.

If you find that registration is full for a class that you want, we encourage you to join the wait list; you might get in if there is a cancellation. If you sign up and cannot make it to a workshop, please let us know ASAP, as we let someone from the waiting list into the program.

Fall card making workshop

Wednesday, November 2, 6:00 p.m.

There are still spots available for our Fall card making workshop! This month we will use punches, crayons and paper altering techniques to create unique greeting cards anyone would be happy to receive.

If you cannot make the in-person session, sign up for Friday's Grab & GO! MYO card kit with similar options for creating your card at home.

Play mahjong on Wednesdays and Thursdays

The library’s Wednesday mahjong group continues to meet at 1 p.m. each week, but for those of you who would like to play and are only free during the evenings, Thursdays evenings from 6-8 p.m. might be a better fit for you!

You don’t have to be an expert – all skill levels are always welcome in both groups. The library has its own game sets and cards, so no need to come with your own supplies, either! Registration is not required to play.
