Agrihoods
Agrihoods, communities based around farms , are part of a growing trend in the U.S. More than 800 people came out to the Arden development for the grand opening of its 5-acre farm and community barn.
It was a beautiful  day in the “agrihood.”

Part of a growing trend of communities built around farms instead of golf courses , Arden is one of 90 agrihoods in the United States and is the first in South Florida . The “farm-to-table” lifestyle of an agrihood is centered around fresh, local produce, an active lifestyle and a strong sense of community.

The husband-and-wife team Tripp and Carmen Eldridge, run this Wellington area farm. The duo offers tours, classes and the opportunity for residents to get their hands dirty while learning first-hand about sustainable agriculture.

Families who buy in Arden’s agrihood share in the farm’s bounty when they receive their free, seasonal allotment of 50 varieties of veggies, 30 kinds of fruits and an array of savory herbs.Between those times, the General Store, located in the community barn, offers locally grown produce and a variety of natural products for sale.

“Access to the farm and nutrition,” said Russell Kelly about what most intrigues him about the idea of an agrihood. “Nutrition is important for kids.”

“In a world where people don’t really speak to their neighbors anymore, we need more neighborhood environments,” he said of the welcoming feeling he gets at Arden.

“The agricultural theme and the location are great,” he said. “It’s not congested, but it’s close enough to downtown West Palm Beach, restaurants and the airport.”

The 1,209-acre development built by Freehold Communities opened in autumn 2017 and by the time it is completed in about 10 years, will offer 2,000 home lots. Ranch and two-story houses range in size from 1,500 square feet to more than 4,000 square feet, ranging in price from the mid-$300,000s to more than $1 million.

The healthy lifestyle community includes miles of walking and biking trails; basketball, tennis and pickleball courts; a lake with rowboats and a pier; a two-level pool with cabanas; picnic areas; and plenty of community gathering spots.

CITRUS SPOTLIGHT
First citrus forecast starts the season on a positive note
BARTOW, Fla. – In the first forecast of the 2019-20 season, the National Agriculture Statistics Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture projected increases in both the Florida Orange and Grapefruit crops over the previous season.
In an announcement Thursday, the USDA predicted Florida Orange production at 74 million boxes and Florida Grapefruit production at 4.6 million boxes for the 2019-20 season. The numbers are a 3 percent increase for oranges and 2 percent increase for grapefruit over 2018-19
“This reflects what we’ve been hearing from growers,” said Shannon Shepp, executive director of the Florida Department of Citrus. “ Florida Citrus is here to stay. We remain the state’s signature crop, and our growers are committed to providing nutritious, great tasting Florida Citrus for years to come.”
According to Ellis Hunt, chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission, Thursday’s forecast is “a positive indicator that the Florida Citrus industry is coming back.”

Punta Gorda's LARGEST tailgate for college football's Rivalry Weekend. Laishley Park will be turned into an all-out tailgate party including Megatron's, TV's, Sports bars, DJ, Food Trucks, and more!

DID YOU KNOW?
History of the Sunshine State Rivalry

The interstate rivalry between the Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles won't have any national title implications this year, but the game won't be lacking in excitement.
Ever since the two schools have been meeting each other on the football gridiron, the game has become one of the focal points between Florida sports fans.

The First Game Was in 1958
The two teams' first meeting occurred in 1958 when the Florida State Seminoles traveled to Florida Field to take on the Gators. The Gators emerged victorious by the score of 21-7. The game was three years removed from Florida State becoming a prominent team in college football.

What was your favorite memory of this rivalry? Bill Peterson days at FSU, the Golden Years at UF, the "Choke at Doak," or the "Swindle at the Swamp?"

About Walt Bethel
Walt Bethel is a fifth generation Floridian, born and raised in Arcadia, with a vast knowledge of all areas of Florida Real Estate and an ardent appreciation for Florida history.
The purchase and development of his first orange grove when he was just sixteen years old fueled Walt's passion for real estate.
Since then, he has bought, owned, and sold a wide variety of properties throughout a successful business career. His investments have included acreage, agricultural properties, residential homes, condos, and commercial properties.
Walt's marketing and sales experience was cultivated over time at his family's business, Bethel Farms, where he marketed, managed, and sold products to "Big Box" retailers across the Southeastern and Midwestern United States.
From an early age, Walt's dad instilled in him the values to work hard and always have a goal, to look for a better way of doing things, and to constantly improve on them.
The daily implementation of these principles, coupled with his enjoyment of networking with new people and his experience in business, sales, and marketing, have contributed to Walt's success as a Realtor.
Walt has served on various boards and committees throughout the years. He has coached and actively supports local youth athletic programs and leagues.
