Catch Fish this Summer and Win....Are you registered for the STAR yet?
Coastal Conservation Association Florida STAR presented by Yamaha is the largest family-friendly saltwater fishing competition in Florida and runs July 1 to October 4.

Anglers from across the state will be in pursuit of those coveted, orange tags when 2020 CCA Florida STAR competition presented by Yamaha kicks off on Wednesday, July 1! Anglers of all ages and skill levels will not only be chasing tagged fish, but also catching and logging non-tagged species, for a chance to win their share of $500,000 in prizes and scholarships.

Winning anglers in the signature iHeart Radio Tagged Redfish Division will have their choice of prizes including a Contender Boats 22 Sport, Pathfinder Boats 2200TRS, Hewes Redfisher 16, Carolina Skiffs 21 LS or Abaco Skiff and each comes equipped with Yamaha-powered boat packages “The last five years of competition is proof that tagged fish can be caught and prizes can be won, you just need to be a CCA Florida member and STAR registrant when you go fishing, ” STAR Director Leiza Fitzgerald said. “To date, there has been over $1 million in prizes awarded with $500,000 of that being college scholarships.”

On average, four STAR iHeart Radio tagged redfish are released per Florida’s coastal counties; however, eight, tagged fish are released in STAR destination counties: Brevard, Charlotte and Citrus.

Tagged or not, STAR anglers have dozens of opportunities to win other terrific prizes just by catching any non-tagged redfish, snook, trout, tarpon, grouper, kingfish, dolphin (mahi-mahi) or grouper. Just submit a photo of your legal catch in the Open, Ladies, Kayak, Fly or even better ANY fish you catch can be entered in the Power Pole Conservation Division for your shot at some really cool Power Pole equipment.

No other fishing tournament in Florida engages anglers and non-anglers across all ages and skill levels while providing so many opportunities to win.

Steube wants to ban citrus imports from China to help local farmers

Help could be on the way for Southwest Florida citrus farmers as they deal with added struggles from the pandemic. Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.)   wants to ban  commercially-produced citrus imports from China .

The number of stressors for U.S. citrus growers piles up by the day. Adding to this heightened hassle: more industry competition, since the USDA approved importing fresh citrus from China, and disease, like citrus greening.

“There’s a lot more than just the domestic production competition. The other issues are the safety of bringing in pests from outside the United States,” Steube said.

He represents the largest citrus-producing district in the U.S., and believes banning commercial citrus imports from China can diminish their dilemma.

“When you were importing citrus from a different country, there are pests and different diseases that you could be bringing into the United States,” he said.

Steube’s  bill  was referred to the US House Ways and Means Committee on June 11.

Much has been made of the pivotal role in early days of Charlotte Harbor and the ships that sailed upon it. Yet, without docks these would have been useless.
The King Street dock by 1906 was crowded with fish houses. The constant traffic of freight trains and commercial fishing boats became a hazard for general wharf uses. Therefore, Punta Gorda council in April conducted a public referendum on a proposal to build a " city dock."
It was three years before folks got around to building a long, city dock at the foot of Sullivan St. where a 60-foot tower had been constructed in 1903 to display storm signals. The job finally was accomplished by volunteer labor and donated materials. The pilings were cabbage palm trunks brought from the Myakka River area.
First tenant of the new City Dock was John Smith, an oyster fisherman. The city built a 14x20 "house for oyster business" and rented it to Smith for $60 per year.
City Dock was damaged by a hurricane in 1926 and rebuilt to about half its original length. It collapsed entirely in 1930.

About Walt Bethel
Walt Bethel is a fifth generation Floridian, born and raised in Arcadia, with a vast knowledge of all areas of Florida Real Estate and an ardent appreciation for Florida history.
The purchase and development of his first orange grove when he was just sixteen years old fueled Walt's passion for real estate.
Since then, he has bought, owned, and sold a wide variety of properties throughout a successful business career. His investments have included acreage, agricultural properties, residential homes, condos, and commercial properties.
Walt's marketing and sales experience was cultivated over time at his family's business, Bethel Farms, where he marketed, managed, and sold products to "Big Box" retailers across the Southeastern and Midwestern United States.
From an early age, Walt's dad instilled in him the values to work hard and always have a goal, to look for a better way of doing things, and to constantly improve on them.
The daily implementation of these principles, coupled with his enjoyment of networking with new people and his experience in business, sales, and marketing, have contributed to Walt's success as a Realtor.
Walt has served on various boards and committees throughout the years. He has coached and actively supports local youth athletic programs and leagues.
He and his wife Jill, also a fourth generation Floridian, reside in Punta Gorda. They have two children, a daughter Peyton and a son Truman.
