PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
LARRY KEENE PASSES AWAY
Chris Winkle
KBA President/CEO
@kbachris
Larry Keene, known by many of you as the founder of the Traffic Directors Guild of America, passed away suddenly a few weeks ago at the age of 79. I had the privilege to talk to Larry about 2 months ago and he shared his gratitude to the KBA for offering membership in the TDGA since it’s inception 18 years ago. The KBA extends our deepest condolences to the entire Keene family. His passion for broadcasting and his leadership with Traffic Directors around the Country will be sorely missed.

What follows is a nice note that we received from his daughter:

Thank you for the many condolences and expressions of sympathy. We know that Larry was well-loved, not only by his family, but by so many in the broadcast industry.

We ask that you bear with us as we go through his many emails (he received hundreds per day). We know some of you had wanted to place classified ads, some have membership questions and we will get to you as soon as we possibly can.

For those of you receiving membership renewal notices, they were auto-generated, so you may still receive a notice even if you already renewed. We are working as quickly as we are able to re-align all of the moving parts that make TDGA function.

In appreciation,
Joanne Keene Hall
daughter of Larry Keene - the best Dad ever

GAMING ADVERTISING REMINDER
Many of you have heard Leigh Ann Thacker and Monica Dias discuss the below KRS regarding the advertising of gaming in the state. This stature (to our knowledge) has rarely (if ever) been enforced by the Kentucky AG’s office. However, the Language below has been interpreted to mean that it is unlawful to “advance gambling activity” in Kentucky. It is our legal counsel’s belief that advertising gaming is therefore unlawful. In particular, commercials that show people sitting at a “slot machine” or nearby casinos (across our borders) advertising poker tournaments or slots would also be a violation.

KRS 528.010(1):
(1) “Advancing gambling activity”--A person “advances gambling activity” when, acting other than as a player, he engages in conduct that materially aids any form of gambling activity. The conduct shall include, but is not limited to, conduct directed toward the establishment of the particular game, contest, scheme, device, or activity involved; toward the acquisition or maintenance of premises, paraphernalia, equipment, or apparatus therefor; toward the solicitation or inducement of persons to participate therein; toward the actual conduct of the playing phases thereof; toward the arrangement of any of its financial or recording phases or toward any other phase of its operation. A person who gambles at a social game of chance on equal terms with other participants does not otherwise advance gambling activity by performing acts, without remuneration or fee, directed toward the arrangement or facilitation of the game as inviting persons to play, permitting the use of premises therefor and supplying equipment used therein;

Is your biggest accountability issue compliance or communication? Accountability is about delivering on a commitment. It’s being responsible for an outcome, as well as a series of tasks. It’s taking initiative and delivering solid follow-through. Accountability should be a culture rather than just a consequence.
Learn to:
• Create a culture of results-ownership
• Motivate your team from ‘box-checking’ to inspired performance
• Identify ways YOU are getting in the way of your team’s success
