News, Resources and Volunteer Opportunities
Open House and PTSA General Meeting, Wednesday August 16:  Please plan to attend our Open House and PTSA General meeting.  You can pick up your student's schedule, then walk through their classes, meet their teachers and learn about class curriculum.  Experts will be on hand to help you set up your ParentVue account.  There will be two identical sessions the first starting at 3:30 p.m. and the second starting directly after the PTSA General Meeting at 5:30 p.m.  At 5:30 p.m., please join us for the PTSA General Meeting in the Theater where all PTSA members will vote for the the budget approval and will learn about PTSA programs.

WALTON STRONG PTSA Register Online:  You can still register by clicking  HERE .  Join the Walton PTSA , volunteer to help out on one of 50+ committees, order you membership, calendar and directory, support programs with your tax-deductible donation, sign up to be a career coach and sign your student up to be mentored by a career coach.

Walton Newcomer's:   Is your Walton student new to Georgia and/or Cobb County Email  waltonhsnewcomers@gmail.com to learn about events and resources for families who are new to the school district and to East Cobb. 
Raiders Choice:   Is your student new to the amazing tools that Office 365 provides.  We encourage those students to attend the Office 365 training provide during WEB on August 16 at 1:00 p.m. during WEB, in the Information Center's Computer Lab.    Learn more about how Cobb County Schools encourage use of Office 365 by clicking HERE.

School Day Extended 45 Minutes on August 21 due to Solar Eclipse:  Due to the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, the Cobb County School District will delay dismissal of elementary, middle and high school students by 45 minutes.  The peak time to experience the solar eclipse falls during our regularly scheduled elementary school dismissal time.  Since student safety is always our first priority so we will delay dismissal to ensure that neither students nor employees are on the roadways during the time of the eclipse. Subsequently, high schools and middle schools will delay dismissal as well.  Schools will be provided with further guidance and instructional resources as appropriate.  Parents are welcome to pick-up their child at the typical dismissal time if needed. For more information regarding the solar eclipse visit the National Weather Service at  http://www.weather.gov/sgf/SolarEclipse.

Copy Crew Volunteers Needed:  If you are looking for a way to get involved at Walton, volunteering with the Copy Crew is a great, flexible way to do that!  The Copy Crew needs volunteers to help teachers and staff with copy needs.  Time commitment is very flexible.  If you are interested, please email Amy Carroll at  amycarroll4@mac.com for more information. 

Information Center Volunteers Needed (Formerly known as the Media Center):  The Information Center is looking for volunteers for WEB days, regular Information Center duties, and inventory. Questions? Please contact Archana Patel at  archana301@yahoo.com.
For WEB days , you would be involved in checking students in and out of school on WEB days and learn about some of the inner workings of the school. WEB is an excellent opportunity for the students to catch up on their studies and get one-on-one help from their teachers. Walton relies on parent volunteers to make this valuable time possible. To sign up click HERE

From the Nurse
A Note from the School Nurse: Over-the counter medicine (OTC), for example:  Ibuprofen, Tylenol, & cough drops may be carried by high school students without an authorization form. *The clinic does not keep a supply of OTC medications. The OTC medicine carried by a student must be in the original container. DO NOT bring OTC medicine in a zip lock bag. This should be a small personal supply of medicine, and may not be shared with other students. Parents and students are responsible for knowing the proper dosage and use of these medicines. For further information re: CCSD medication procedures and clinic protocols at school. Click HERE.
From Administration
Vocabulary and Class Fee Information:   The front office will not be able to accept the School Sales Forms that were used during Orientation to purchase items from the school and pay class dues. If your child did not purchase their Vocabulary books during orientation, he/she may purchase it during their English class. Books will cost $20. If your child is a Senior taking AP Literature, the price will be $6.00.  Your child may pay their Junior/Senior dues in the Front office. This fee is paid once during your student's junior OR senior year and includes Prom tickets for junior and senior year, Senior Breakfast,  Senior Picnic, Graduation expenses & other class activities. This fee is $80. You may pay for the PSAT test during October (10th grade test fees are paid by the county). Remember, no credit cards are accepted!  Please send cash (correct change, please) or a check for each item. Thank you for your cooperation!

For Seniors
Senior Parent Night:   Please join us for a presentation on the College Application Process on Monday, August 21st at 6:30 p.m. in the Theater.  We will discuss college application basics, Naviance, the HOPE scholarship, and other pertinent information for seniors.  After the general presentation, we will have Q&A time and then an additional presentation for interested families on highly selective college admissions and a Naviance demonstration.  If you are unable to attend the presentation, we will post the PowerPoint on our website.  Click HERE to visit the website. 
Sope Creek Elementary Alums Class of 2018:   We will be taking a picture of all students who attended Sope Creek for the yearbook tribute page on Sunday, August 13th at 5:30 p.m. Please meet at the Sope Creek playground.   Please RSVP by   emailing Kim Fullerton atkfullerton@bellsouth.net .  We will determine the per person cost once we have an estimate on students attending.  Please bring cash on August 13th and we will have a few parents collect the money at the time of the picture. 
Attention East Side Elementary Alums Class of 2018:  We will be taking a picture for the East Side yearbook tribute page on Sunday, August 20th at 5:30 p.m. at the playground. Bethel Elementary Alums CLASS of 2018:  We will be taking a picture of all students who attended MB for the yearbook tribute page on Sunday, August 27th at 5:30 p.m. on the playground on the hill near the BIG electronic sign. For Freshman
Freshman Math Night:   August 7th at 6:30 p.m. Parents, come and learn about the math curriculum at Walton!

WEB and Club Fair:  Our first WEB is schedule for August 9th and all Freshman are required to stay at school this day. The Walton Club Fair will be open for students to sign-up and get involved.  We encourage all students to explore the 80+ clubs available at Walton, a complete list can be found by clicking HERE.
Clubs and Organizations
Walton PTSA Community Outreach Club: The Kick-Off Meeting will be in the Information Center Lecture Hall on Thursday, August 17th  at  3:30 p.m.   Did you know that Walton PTSA Community Outreach Club sends hundreds of students into the community to tutor, visit the elderly, feed the homeless and much more?
Students:  Come to our Kick-Off Meeting and learn about the  opportunities available,  requirements of club membership, and  how to get involved.  (Stop by our table at Club Fair for more information.)  Student leaders will be available to answer questions.

Legislation and Advocacy
Federal funding for public education programs has remained at 2% of the federal budget for decades, despite the increase in public school enrollment and the rising cost of education resources and services. This disparity between funding levels and actual costs means that the federal government has essentially enacted cuts to classrooms.

If you would like the US to have a strong economy powered by a well-educated workforce that can compete on the global stage, then stand with 4 million parents, teachers, students and community leaders as we demand that Congress #STOPCutsToClassrooms and invest more than 2% in public education before the next fiscal year on October 1, 2017.

Here's how to participate in the STOP Cuts to Classrooms campaign:
  • Sign the petition to #STOPCutsToClassrooms to make your voice heard and receive regular updates on the campaign.  Click HERE
  • Share your thoughts on social media (use our sample tweets and Facebook posts) and participate in Funding Fridays on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram to raise awareness that 2% of federal funding for public education is not enough.  Click HERE
  • Visit National PTA's #STOPCutsToClassrooms webpage to learn more about federal funding for public education and view the campaign toolkit for more information.
Why National PTA Endorsed the Teachers and Parents at the Table Act:   The Teachers and Parents at the Table Act would create two committees made up of teachers, parents and family members to advise the Secretary of Education, report to Congress on family engagement in education and offer guidance for state and local education leaders to improve family engagement policies in schools.

Walton Raider Football:    Come cheer on the Walton Raiders as they take on the North Gwinnett Bulldogs at the Georgia State Stadium (formerly Turner Field) on August 19th at 8:45 p.m.  General Admission is $13.00.  Tickets Sale Dates are Thursday, August 15th at the  Raider Valley Ticket Booth from  5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m and on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday,  August 16th, 17th, and 18th in the  Walton High School Dining Hall from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.   Questions contact   tammy.feilmeier@cobbk12.org

Musical Theater Audition Workshop : On Saturday, August 12 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. in the Walton Theater, there will be a one-day intensive program to prepare for successful auditioning. There will be coaching in the areas of dance, voice, acting, and overall audition skills run by WHS teacher/musical theater director Susan Griffin. 
To Register:   Drop the completed/signed Audition Workshop  Form  and $50 cash or check made payable to Walton Drama Boosters in the designated box/envelope in Mrs. Green's Room 302 by Friday, August 11th.  Late Registration will be accepted at the door on August 12th and is $60. Registration includes pizza lunch. 
Auditions for 2017-2018 Shows:  Auditions for BOTH THE FALL MUSICAL AND SPRING SHOW will be held on August 14th and August 15th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Walton Theater.  The fall musical is Pippin (performances October 26-28) and the spring show is TBD (most likely a comedy or murder mystery, performances March 15-17). YOU MUST ATTEND BOTH DAYS if you want to audition for either/both of the shows (you do not have to attend the Audition Workshop in order to audition on August 14).  Rehearsals for both shows are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Saturdays.

For Monday August 14th, prepare:
1) Completed/signed Audition Form (also on  www.waltondrama.com or pickup in Room 302)
2) 45-60 second memorized BROADWAY MUSICAL song selection (ABSOLUTELY NO POP/COUNTRY/ROCK), bring instrumental CD, mp3 player/iPhone/droid for accompaniment.  We will provide a speaker.
3) Memorized 60-90 second monologue selection from a published play (any genre)
Crew for Pippin:  MANDATORY Parent Meeting  If you are cast in or will be part of the Crew for Pippin, there will be a MANDATORY Parent Meeting on Tuesday, August 22nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Walton Theater.  The completed PARENT PACKET AND FEES ARE DUE AT THIS MEETING.
