News, Resources and Volunteer Opportunities
Walton PTSA General Meeting, 5:30 pm and Spring Semester Open House, 6:30 pm will take place this Thursday, January 18th.  All PTSA members and guests should plan to attend the PTSA General Meeting where Suzanne Schott, Walton Assistant Principal, will speak about technology and how it impacts teenage brain development and school performance.  Directly after the meeting attendees can pick up student schedules and meet the teachers.  Please note the Open House will occur only at 6:30 pm this year and zero period will begin at 6:20.

Second annual TEDx WaltonHigh Come join us next Saturday, January 20th, at 2pm in the Walton Lecture Hall for the second annual TEDx WaltonHigh. The theme is Connecting People. The 2nd Annual Community Connections Resource Fair

PTSA Sponsors "Intro to Mindfulness" Presentation, January 17th, 4-5:30 or 6:30-7:30pm: Want to find out more about this powerful tool for stress and anxiety reduction and performance enhancement?  Join us for an "Intro to Mindfulness", Wednesday, Jan. 17 in the WHS Information Center Lecture Hall.  This free one-hour presentation is offered from 4-5:00pm and from 6:30-7:30pm. Parents, teachers and students are encouraged to attend.  Mindfulness is an approach to train our brains to recognize and control our body's stress response, changes the way our brain and body react to the stress we encounter every day in our fast-paced, high tech lifestyle.  If not addressed, chronic stress can wreak havoc on our bodies, contributing to disease, affecting our emotions, relationships, and performance, and dramatically lowering our quality of life. For more information, click here.  To Register, click here: I want to learn more about MINDFULNESS! 

The Entrepreneurial Mindset Workshop led by Kennesaw State University Coles College of Business 
PTSA Raiders Choice and Skills USA is bringing in 2 professors to facilitate an entrepreneurial workshop.  If your student wants to study business or just has a good idea to market please have them attend, January 24 1:00 to 3:00 pm during WEB in the Lecture Hall.  

Hidden Dangers Presentation, January 31st: The Multicultural Consortium for Ending Child Slavery has organized an event for teens and their parents, January 31st, 7:30 pm at 1190 Indian Hills Pkwy.  The event will cover social media sexting, pornography, and trafficking. Legislative News
Legislation & Advocacy  The 2018 Georgia general legislative session began on Monday, January 8 and Gov. Nathan Deal delivered his final State of the State address on Thursday. His theme this year was on planting trees for the future. During the speech, Gov. Deal noted the investment in education under his administration. (Note: austerity cuts of $160 million continue in FY18). He also spoke about the HOPE Scholarship program and investment in the technical college system. Deal noted the Commission on Children's Mental Health is charged with providing recommendations on improving state mental health services for children. Funding for behavioral health and substance abuse are also major needs for Georgia. Read the full text  here . The FY 2019 budget is $26.0 billion and built on 3.7% general fund growth over FY 2018. The 2018 Senior Evening of Inspiration Planning meeting January 24thThe 2018 Senior Evening of Inspiration is scheduled for May 21st  and we need your help to make it a special evening for YOU and YOUR classmates.   All seniors are invited to the first meeting to start planning your event. Join us on  Wednesday, January 24th at 1:00 pm  We will meet in the Atrium Conference Room to discuss the evening while enjoying some pizza.  Please join us and bring your friends along to help.  Feel free to contact Sarajane Fletcher (sjfletcher@hotmail.com) or Susan Fanning (sfanning1@bellsouth.net) with questions.

Clubs and Organizations
Mini Dance Marathon, Saturday, January 20th, Noon to 4pm: Principal's Leadership Committee is sponsoring FOR THE KIDS, a mini dance marathon for the benefit of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta on Saturday, January 20th from 12 noon until 4 p.m. in the WHS Dining Hall.  Georgia Tech students will be on hand to provide music, games, food and fun. Admission and general participation are free. Students may want to bring some money to participate in some special games during the event. All proceeds go to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Students will receive community service hours for this event.  Everyone is welcome! Click here for more information.

Second Annual Sadie Hawkins Winter Ball will be held Saturday, February 3rd, 7:00 - 10:00 in the Walton gymnasium. Girls can ask a date or girls and guys can attend with a group of friends. Dress is semi-formal attire. Tickets can be purchased for $20 starting January 20th during lunch period. Cash or check made out to Walton High School. Chick-fil-a Leadership Academy is hosting the event to raise money to give back to the community.  This will be a really fun night that students are not going to want to miss!

Attention Math-athletes of all Ages: The Walton  Math Team is hosting Dr. Po-Shen Loh (Associate Professor of Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University, national math team coach and the "Elvis" of the math world).  He will be visiting the Walton campus and speaking to our students January 30, 5:00 pm in the Lecture Hall.  For more information click Here

The Walton Chorus Annual Fashion Show and Silent Auction, "ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE," will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018 in the Walton Theater.  This event features our talented students performing songs and modeling fashions from local retailers. Enjoy the silent auction in the new rotunda offering items such as concert tickets, gift certificates, a Big Green Egg, an iPhone and much more!  Silent auction at 6:00pm and show at 7:00pm.  Tickets are $12 in advance/$15 at the door and can be purchased here.
