Prescribing Buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder Just Got Easier

Maryland's healthcare teams, with support from the Maryland Department of Health, play a crucial role in tackling the opioid crisis by offering access to buprenorphine. Buprenorphine, a proven treatment for opioid use disorder, is an important tool for preventing overdose. Despite the overwhelming evidence for buprenorphine’s effectiveness, this treatment has been underutilized. Recent legislation removed the waiver requirement for buprenorphine prescribing to broaden access to treatment.

Effective December 29, 2022, the DATA 2000 waiver is no longer required to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder. Only a DEA number is needed. The removal of the x-waiver makes it easier for prescribers to provide life-saving treatment for opioid use disorder. This legislative change, coupled with free services from the Maryland Addiction Consultation Service, can empower healthcare providers to take action in addressing the crisis. MACS supports providers and their teams with providing buprenorphine and other services for substance use care.

In this video, MACS consultants and addiction medicine experts, Drs. Sarah Kattakuzhy and Michael Fingerhood share how MACS can support healthcare practitioners and their practices in providing buprenorphine and other office-based services for substance use disorders. INFORMATION, RESOURCES, & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Change Is Possible, You Can Make It Happen!

Have you ever said, “there ought to be a law” or “this law or regulation makes no sense because it impedes me from providing the care I know is needed?” And, have you ever said, “nothing’s going to change; why get involved?” If you have uttered any of these comments or questions loudly or under your breath, the answer is that change is possible. Changing laws or regulations can seem daunting; however, MCMS provides a process that allows you to bring an idea for change forward which can be addressed at a state level or a federal level if that is needed.

This form is a workflow to help you process your thoughts – What change do you think is needed and why? What action needs to be taken to accomplish it? Is it a state or federal issue? This is the way all resolutions for consideration by MedChi’s House of Delegates start. One physician. One idea or challenge. Working through MCMS to see the change you know is needed to improve your ability to care for your patients and your well-being.

If you have questions, contact Susan D’Antoni at [email protected]. She’s happy to shepherd you through the process.
