The annual Willowbrook meeting took place on April 14. Donald Davis and I watched together as family members joined via zoom this year to discuss the tragedies of this institution and the call for activism for the rights and humane treatment of individuals who were brought there. As I sat and watched with Donald I often noticed him shaking his head and saying "oh yeah" in agreement as people spoke of the terrible sights, smells, and sounds that were ever present. Back then parents were told it was best to place their children in such establishments. Fighters like Henrietta Messier, who was one of the founders of our Arc chapter, stood up for the rights of these human beings to be treated as equal and deserving individuals. Henrietta knew she wanted better for her child and for other's children. The road has been long and the fight has been hard. We can not give up or take a break yet. The fight is not over. You can help by adding your voice to ours. Join our 2021 membership now. Let others know that you believe in our mission of advocacy, resources, and support services so that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live the life they choose. Help us also to raise awareness at the the level of government funding needs to increase so that we are able to pay our staff more than a minimum living wage.

Thank you for your support,

Fundraising Event This Sunday
May 2nd
The Arc of Rensselaer County is hosting a COVID friendly drive through fundraising event on May 2, 2021 from 9-am-3 pm. Find us at Heims Gas Station 5 North Greenbush Road, North Greenbush. We will be collecting returnable cans and bottles, clothing and textiles and cash donations.

Just load your trunk, drive over to Heims and we will unload it from there. You never have to leave your vehicle!

Items such as shoes, boots, clothing, rags, stuffed animals, bedding, pillows, blankets, worn out dog beds, leashes, curtains, fabric etc. are among accepted items. Mattresses or furniture are not accepted.

100% of the net profits from this event will go toward the development of a technology integrated state of the art sensory room at our Brunswick Center Day Services. BCS provides day services to adults, many who have sensory sensitivities that affect their daily lives. Our Sensory Room will help to provide opportunity for exercising motor skills and emotional regulation, as well as the chance for integrative experiences that might not be possible otherwise. Especially in our present day restrictions due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are relying on technology to bridge many gaps. The utilization of an interactive touch wall system would be an invaluable tool for meeting daily living goals and providing the capability of visual and sensory experiences limited only to the imagination.

So go ahead, clean our those closets, grab your cans and bottles then bring them over to us! You will feel better meeting your goals while helping us meet ours!

Can't make it to the event? No problem. You can still make a donation. Just click below

Congratulations To Mike Piazza
Vice Chair Kelly Hoffman of the County Legislator had the honor of presenting a commendation to one of their most cherished employees, Mike Piazza for 20 years of service!

Mike started as an unpaid volunteer through The Arc of Rensselaer County as part of the Community Inclusion Project. He assists in recycling cans and bottles throughout the county office building, donating proceeds to the Hudson Mohawk Humane Society. He also recycles books and pamphlets that are outdated and expendable. During his tenure, he has also helped legislative staff clean and organize for monthly meetings and events.

Mike Piazza brings a smile to everyone's face as he travels through the county office building, and appreciate his friendship and positive spirit.

Job well done Mike!
